Sandsharks are a strange and fearsome subspecies of Lizardman that dwells in deserts. They are noticibly smaller than other Lizardmen, often having a build that sides more towards being petite than voluptuous. Their scales are always some shade of sandy yellow or brown, often speckled to aid in camouflage. Most notable however is that their scales are unusually durable and have a smooth, glossy texture, offering almost no friction when touching something and allowing sand and similar debris to simply glide off of its surface. This allows the Sandsharks to swim through sand and loose soil as easily as an actual shark can swim through water, thus earning their name. Due to the fact that theit primary form of transportation is by swimming in sand, very few clothing materials can survive a Sandsharks day to day life, thus in order to compensate for this, they have taken to using their own shed scales combined with durable and easily replaced materials to fashion clothing from, due to a scarcity of materials, the clothing they wear is often just barely enough to maintain their modesty.
Like other Lizardmen, Sandsharks live a warrior lifestyle, often mastering various forms of sword fighting. However unlike most Lizardmen, who practice swordsmanry solely for the sake of swordmanry, Sandsharks also seek to use these skills to profit. Often taking roles as sellswords, bodyguards, or most commonly, pirates. Despite the fact the fact that they take a less pure path in swordmanry, their skills have not suffered any for it nor does their small size hinder them in a fight. In fact, if anything Sandsharks are even more dangerous than the average Lizardman because they do not issue formal challenges and will not hesitate to use dirty or underhanded tricks to ensure their victory.
As stated before, many Sandsharks choose a life of piracy, often forming into groups and attacking Sand Ships, stealing goods, gold, and food. They use their ability to swim through the sand to approach the samd ships unnoticed before burstinh out and boarding the ship in a surprise attack. Often the smaller and weaker crews go without a ship, swimming to travel and taking shelter in caves, crevices or simply under the sand, often acting more as a band of bandits than as a pirate crew. However the stronger ones have often appropriated sand ships for their own use, oftem decorating these ships in the skulls and bones of fearsome beasts and engaging in fierce "naval" battles along with their typical swimming ambushes.
Some of the most fearsome crews have even tamed Jhen Mohrans to use as living battleships, leading the beast towards more bountiful feading grounds and getting rid of pests on it in return for its services. They often fashion ear guards to protect the beast from hunting gongs, carve out dwellings in the rock encrusting the beasts back, and use parts from sand ships to arm and armor the beast as well as make covers to protect their creations when the beast submerges itself. Though the Sandsharks are rarely skilled in construction like this and their creations often come out as very crude, it often proves to be effective none the less.
Despite frequently being thieves, Sandsharks do have a sense of honor. They do not steal from each other and always keep their end of a bargain. They always remember when someone has given them good turn and make sure to repay that debt and of course they are fiercely loyal, both the crew to their captain and the captain to her crew. Men who are kidnapped by Sandsharks during a raid can often expect to be treated well, often being given comfortable accommodations and good food while being kept with them. It should be noted that Sandsharks do not keep these men to be their husbands but instead ransom these men out or sell them to other mamono as husbands. Because of this, many desert dwelling mamono try to keep a positive relationship with the local Sandsharks.
Sandsharks follow the age old Lizardman tradition of choosing their husbands by right of combat. In order to ensure that they have a strong mate, they only wed a man who can defeat her in battle. However unlike other Lizardmen who find such a man by seeking out warriors and challenging them to duels, Sandsharks find these amongst the opponents they face during the course of their career. Should a man engage a Sandshark in one on one combat and defeat her, regardless of the situation, she retreat back to her ship and leave with the rest of her crew as soon as the crews business there is completed, however she will return alone soon after to propose to him and convince him to come with her to rest of her crew. As can be expected of a mamono, the Sandshark will not take no for an answer and will continuously follow and pester him to marrying her. They are remarkably stubborn in this and will follow him to the ends of the earth if need be. After continous refusal they will take more drastic action, often ambushing the man, bursting out of the sand and quickly wrapping her arms around the man, showering him in affection. Eventually she may even get the rest of her crew to assist her leading coordinated ambushes to go after him or even having the crew invade a ship for the sole purpose of collecting him. Fortunately, the man may not have to be dragged to her crew as it is possible to convince the Sandshark in question to retire from the life of a pirate. However the loyalty Sandsharks have towards their captain and their crew often makes this very difficult and even when the man is successful it's often only with the permission of the crews captain.
After having marriage many Sandsharks continue their life of piracy with their husband by their side, at least for a time. After becoming pregnant they often retire in order to raise and train their yound in safety. Despite their normally combative lifestyle, Sandsharks often prove to be surprisingly skilled in domestic life, keeping a home clean and cooking delicious meals, much like other Lizardmen tend to. It should be noted however, that the rule of one on one combat only truly applies to the man during a battle. Should a man defeat several Sandsharks at the same time, all of them will attempt to claim him as their husband, sharing him between themselves, and should a man defeat the captain of a Sandshark crew, he may soon find himself with the entire crew coming after him with the intent of making him their new captain, though only the Samdsharks that he had defeated would desire him as their husband.
[And here we have the Sandshark, based off of the real life lizard the sandfish. Now, these girls are loosely based off of sandfish since most of what the sandfish does is swim around in the sand and eat bugs. So I took the the way KCs original Lizardman behaved and threw that in. As I was mulling over the concept and the fact that they live mostly in the Sand Sea I had the idea of them being pirates and just kind of ran with it. And of course I couldn't find a good pic for this one.
