Lurker at the Threshold is the common name for these Mamono. Although the name is lengthy, in the common language this is what their species name is equivalent to. The name of this species is actually classified in the native language of their mother, the Dea Monstrum, Yog-Sothoth. The actual name for this species cannot be written by any human hand and speaking it is impossible since saying it or hearing it can cause pain to mortals who make the attempt. So forgive this humble author for focusing more on his personal health than being thorough in his report.
These Mamono are the daughters of Yog-Sothoth, the Dea Monstrum of Magic and the patron God of the Dark Mages. These Mamono were the result of Yog-Sothoth indulging her lovers either as lovers, or as part of a bargain struck. Oddly, Yog-Sothoth can either give birth to her daughters herself through her male lovers, or somehow impregnate her female lovers and somehow keep from transforming those women into Mamono in the process. Considering Yog-Sothoth is a god, this is not nearly as shocking as if a regular Mamono had done it.
Lurkers at the Threshold (or Lurkers for short) share a strong resemblance with their mother. Their bodies are shapely, having the curves of their mother, although not interchangeable as their mother’s figure is. Their entire body is purple, with their hair being a mix of purple and black with glowing yellow eyes. They do not sport the glowing eyes of their mother and they cannot change their shapes like their mother can, being born with a mortal parent, they are subject to the laws of mortal existence more than their mother is. The only real aspect they can change is their density, able to make themselves as dense as stone or even harder, but make them as soft as air, able to slide around anything coming at them.
Lurkers act as their mother’s emissary on Earth, travelling and meeting with potential worshippers, but also organizing and meeting with groups of followers in various towns, cities, and individual homes to work any deals the followers may need, or lead any religious services the followers of the Yog-Sothoth Faith may need. Many followers of the Yog-Sothoth Faith and even the odd person who met them claim that the Lurkers are friendly and very open to conversation. They listen to requests and are master negotiators, likely having learned from their mother. All of Yog-Sothoth’s children seem to have a mystical/psychic link to their mother. This grants great knowledge and wisdom to all of the Lurkers and allows them to make perfectly fair prices to any and all who wish to make a deal with Yog-Sothoth.
Although they are agents of a god, they are still Mamono. Many of their deals, provided that the prices are not too steep, or their mother’s direct involvement is required, most of their prices for their knowledge, experience, and/or services will amount to ‘have sex with me’. Dark Mages and men in particular will pay this price happily, pleasuring the Lurker until they cannot go on. Human women will also pay this price, but often they will end up transforming into Mamono unless they specifically ask not to be changed. As ones connected to Yog-Sothoth, the Lurkers do know how to make love to other women without transforming them. Otherwise, they will turn into Dark Mages.
Eventually, the Lurkers will find a man who they quickly fall in love with and wish to have become their husbands. In these cases, they will break the common practice of waiting for others to come to them and quickly offer deals to the man in question. Whatever situation they find the man in, they will offer the means of getting the best outcome. In every case, their price will be the same: “You will become my husband.” Not many men who know who the Lurkers represent will resist, either for personal gain, stunned by their beauty, or out of fear for their mother. The ones who do will have the Lurker constantly appear, offering their assistance in return for the same price. In extreme cases, the Lurker will use her power to give her future husband dreams of what their married life together will be like, especially with the bedroom games they will have. Eventually, either through desperate need or desperate lust, the man will accept.
A Lurker family is always nomadic, continuing their duties as the children of Yog-Sothoth. They only travel in gypsy-style wagons or travel from town to town and stay in the care of the Dark Mages and other practitioners who follow the Yog-Sothoth faith. Oddly, Lurkers do not give birth to more Lurkers, but instead to Dark Mages. This is believed that a third generation child does not have enough of Yog-Sothoth’s energies to be a Lurker like their mothers, but their natural magic power does become very potent.
