The Queens in Yellow are the daughters of the Dea Monstrum known as Hastur. Unlike their distant relatives the Lurkers at the Threshold, the title they wear is not in fact translated from the mother’s native language. The name was given to them from the followers of the Hastur Faith. Since their mother is known as the ‘King in Yellow’ these Mamono were given the title ‘Queen in Yellow’. Although some monster specialists have a number of different names, they seem to prefer the title the Hastur Faith has given to them and only answer to it.
The appearance of the Queens is rather appropriate to their names. The Queens in Yellow are always seen where yellow dresses, usually of a fine material which hides their physical appearance, but clings to their bodies to show their desirable assets and sensual grace. However, any individual features about them are always difficult to see since they always wear gloves and a bridal-like veil which completely covers their features. Although some people claim to have seen a glimpse underneath the dress or in their sleeves, no two stories match, many saying they saw qualities similar to that of a Scylla, while others say they saw more of a Jabberwock, with even more saying they saw something else.
Queens in Yellow are a nomadic group. They travel the land to meet with their mother’s followers as well as take in any kind of exposition of art that catches their attention. Primarily though, they act as missionaries, spreading the word of their mother’s faith and attempting to convert others into followers. Contrary to their mysterious appearances, the Queens are in fact very honest and open about themselves and their mother’s faith. Scholars have even questioned them at length about their religion. Although the Queens seem quite honest, they also offer maddening answers. Some of the simplest asking about their true appearances are answered in ways such as “I look like myself” or “I take after my mother.”
One thing all the Queens in Yellow have with them is a copy of their mother’s work, The King in Yellow. A play which causes anyone who reads it to lose their minds in lust and fornicate with someone they are in love with. Being under the influence of this play ultimately has the people watching it undergo monsterization, but some argue it is not the play itself, but the Queen in Yellow facilitating this transformation through the play rather than the play itself. When a Queen was questioned about this, she merely answered “It is no magic of mine or my mother’s, but merely the power of a masterpiece. You really should see it. I’d think you’d love it.”
Because of the extreme reaction of watching the play, The Order has demanded every copy’s destruction and bounties placed on anyone who has it and has not turned it in, especially on the Queens in Yellow who openly admit to carrying it. However, despite The Order’s attempts, any copy they receive a lead on somehow vanishes and Queens in Yellow likewise disappear when they’ve been tracked down. Despite this, Queens in Yellow so far have not attempted to infiltrate any major city or town, often being seen on the edges of frontier territories. Strategists believe that the Queens are playing the cautious game, slowly working their way inwards from the edges.
A common tactic for the Queens in Yellow is to enter a village or small town, usually a frontier place as stated previously. The villages will likely be hurting for entertainment or at least something to do to at least break the autonomy of the day. The Queen will then seek out someone of artistic skill and present them the play, encouraging them to take it and make a presentation out of it. It is theorized that the name of the play is changed so that no one will recognize it until it is too late. The artist will accept it, and with the Queen’s encouragement and advice, lead local volunteers into producing the play. Again, no one will receive the full script or act out the entire play so no one will realize what is happening until the play begins and by then it will be too late. It is believed that this is how the Queens in Yellow find husbands, as most directors of the play disappear during the chaos and are not seen again save for sparse reports of men travelling with the Queens in Yellow.
If the Queens in Yellow do have children, no one has seen them. Either they are kept in one place to be raised by their fathers until they are old enough to likewise travel, or they are born as a different species of Mamono and it is impossible to distinguish them from others of their kind. The latter theory supports the idea that the Queens in Yellow are a title rather than a breed, but could follow the same pattern as the Lurkers, and other children of the Dea Monstrum: Grandchildren of Hastur taking after her worshippers rather than herself.
