Nightingales are small harpies with rusty red feathers. These feathers form stripes on their wings with bands of white in between. The nightingales are almost never seen without wearing of is a white frock and a white flat hat with a red X on the front. It is unknown why they chose this outfit, but it is speculated that it provides a nice contrast to their red feathers.
These mamono are almost exclusively healers and are trained from birth on how to heal wounds. Oftentimes their father is made to play the role of the “victim” so they can hone their skills. If they are not careful he might end up bandaged from head to foot. While the nightingale have no healing magic their knowledge of herbs and techniques are second to none. Not surprisingly they are employed in almost all of the hospitals of demon realms and monster friendly countries the world over.
While the nightingale is happy they sing, a song that is both beautiful and heartwarming. It is said that the song is so pretty that it can even prevent people from dying. When more than one nightingale is present they will all synchronize their songs without trying so that it forms one coherent whole. This is why a group of nightingales are called an orchestra.
Nightingales generally have no issue with finding mates as their beautiful song and caring bedside manner make many men fall for them. It is not uncommon to leave the hospital with a new nightingale wife. The nightingale will spend the rest of her life caring for him as gently as she did when they first met.
They take extremely good care of their husband’s health treating them to nutritionally balanced meals and making sure they get plenty of exercise in their activities. Any small sign of illness will be relentlessly treated until their husbands are healthy once more.
For some reason nightingales have a deep pathological hatred of machines. They cannot help but see a complex device and want to smash it. This is why there are parts of the hospital and city that are off limits to them. No one really knows why, but it may have to do with their belief that the old ways are still the best.
As may be guessed the automata is the natural enemy of the nightingale, being both machine and a weapon of war. Near hospitals you may see puzzled automata being berated by one or more nightingales. Thankfully, this is a one sided aggression on the side of the nightingale as if the automata would actually attack the tiny harpy would loose instantly.
