(I'm not particularly happy with how this one turned out, but I've figured I put in too much effort at this point to just scrap it.)
Legend has it that, a long time ago, these very ruins were more than just the remnants of a great disaster. The area used to be the location of a fairly large and prosperous human town, known primarily for its booming economy and growing population, factors which set it apart from the other local villages which were, in their majority, home to peasants and farmhands. It was also, for the very same reasons, used as the region's trading hub, so witnessing a crowd of merchants travelling through the settlement to sell their goods was a daily occurrence.
Life was bliss until the night of the unforeseen tragedy. Right after curfew, a few guards swore to have seen a large silhouette flying in circles in the distance, but were quick to dismiss it as no immediate danger. Next thing they knew, fire was raining from the skies and the town was set ablaze. A midnight dragon attack, resulting in hundreds of casualties and the complete destruction of the settlement. The day after, naught was left of the once flourishing town but ruins and embers, and those who didn't manage to escape died along with their home.
The catastrophe left a few survivors, however, to pass down the tale to future generations. One of your ancestors happened to be one of those survivors, and told this story to their children, which then shared it along with their own children, and on it went. Over time, it became the kind of tale you'd tell at a family reunion, really, especially since that's exactly what your parents have done ever since you were a child. Though different versions of it are not at all uncommon given how long ago the story supposedly took place, every single one ends with the town being burned to the ground and the guilty dragon never being seen or heard from again.
In what might have been an act of stupidity and curiosity, one night you decided to take up your family's heirloom sword and proceeded to leave unannounced to search for the ruins yourself.
And that's why you now stand before the ancient remains of what was once, uncontestedly, the most thriving town in the entire region. There are no doubts the settlement ended in flames, though it could have just as likely been arson, instead. They say every dragon has a lair, so now it's just a matter of finding it... assuming it does exist, of course.
But your thoughts are suddenly interrupted when you see a beautiful woman kneeling down before what you assume to have been the town hall, which is now mostly just an unrecognizable pile of cinders. This woman, you observe, seems to have scaly limbs, a reptilian tail, two pointy horns at the top of her head, and a pair of wings. It doesn't look like she's noticed your presence just yet.
What Would You Do?
