(Another post since I can’t edit the old one anymore. This is the updated profile with @Gabrielhenriquecosta ’s beautiful art, the general info at the beginning and a little something something for you at the end.
Hint-it’s in bold and ALL CAPS.
I also have a new monster ready, do you want me to post it now?)
FAMILY / TYPE: Succubus/Bug
HABITAT: outer Lush Island swamps naturally, Urbs Maior (Greater Citadel, where the Palace is located)
DISPOSITION: honest, cheerful, bold
DIET: omnivorous. likes fruit and small prey animals
Dragonflies are born when a Lesser Succubus forms a pact with a Lamia (this is because dragonflies were known as “Snake Doctors”, you can look that up, they’re very interesting).
They are distantly related to actual dragons, and as a result, most of them are very confident, although they are not as proud.
Because of their charming personalities and gracefulness, they often acquire jobs that have to do with performing, like dancing or singing, and are even trusted by the Demon Lord herself to deliver her messengers (dragonflies were seen as omens and underlings of the Devil, during ancient times).
Boasting vibrant, metallic colors comparable to those of a Papillion, they possess two horns resembling big mandibles, have four wings which can look more Succubus-like or insectoid depending on the individual, have whiplike tails covered by large scales that end in tiny heart shaped pincers they use to block the male during mating.
A few have long and thin antennae that they usually hide in their hair (basically when the Empress first attempted to create Dragonflies, she made them with antennae. However, most of the girls didn’t like them and generation after generation they disappeared completely. The few individuals with antennae today descend directly from the first, original Dragonfly “prototypes”. Some are proud of this, and some don’t really care.).
They never force themselves on males, their occupations and friendly personalities are enough to attract suitors. Although they dress in tight clothing, they usually have a more conservative and elegant style.
Dragonflies accompany the Lamias that chose them for the entirety of their lives, healing them when they get hurt, and always coming to help them whenever they are called. They have their own lives, but stay loyal to them wherever they are in the world and in return they receive the Lamia’s attention and gifts, such as their shed skin. They can either eat the skin, which increases their power, elevates their rank and helps them develop a better defended exoskeleton with bigger, spiky plates, or they can search for human women to monsterize by giving them the skin.
Interestingly, they use their weak magic to shrink themselves enough to lay on someone’s finger or head. Nobody knows for sure why they do this, but theories suggests that it is so their compound 360 degrees vision eyes can spot prey better, be it food or human men, or they do this as a form of affection or blessing to their spouses and friends.
They seem to have an odd fascination with eyes, and can spend several minutes staring at strangers, and also often stimulate their partners by nibbling and flicking their forked tongues at their ears (in some cultures, dragonflies are knows as eye snatchers/ear cutters).
They are natural born predators with excellent survival skills who can live in harsh environments, and their intuitive skills allow them to avoid traps such as Arachne silk webs. Don’t be fooled by their frail looks: Dragonflies may have weaker magic compared to their cousins, but are much stronger physically compared to dragons because of their special exoskeletons and highly damaging attacks.
They simply cannot be knocked out and their agility makes them formidable fighters. As an ultimate defense mechanism, their bite contains a lethal cocktail of bacteria enough to induce mild necrosis to their attackers. (Dragonflies were thought to have spread the plague.)
There is a variant called the damselflies; while dragonflies are very curvy, damselflies have more delicate and thinner bodies, and even shinier, more contrasting colors. Some of them are even lolis.
The actual height, however, doesn’t matter to distinguish them. Shortstacks would still be classified as dragonflies because of their large amounts of adipose tissue, while for oppai lolis, the issue is a bit more complicated. They could be one or another, depending on their physical defenses. (Damselflies have a magical power comparable to that of a witch, but are quite weak physically).
A sure fire way to distinguish between the two is to observe the Succubus’ wings while not in use. If while resting, the wings are outstretched, she will be a dragonfly, while if the wings are folded on their backs, and kind of “stand” upright, she is classified as a damselfly.
Dragonflies and Damselflies function a bit like the Trumparts in Wonderland. They are the Empress’ Royal Guards and have power comparable to them.
While the Dragonflies are slightly more powerful than their Lamia friends, their rank is loosely tied with the species of Lamia they form a tie with:
1) Echidnas
2) Aphopis
3) Medusas
4) Shirohebis
5) Basilisks
6) Bunyips
7) normal Lamias
(Sorry if I put your favorite Lamia at bottom tier, I’m only sure about the first three ☹️)
PS: the “Empress” is the ruler of an archipelago called the Lush Islands. She’s a Lilim/Demon. Let me know if you also want a description of her and her native land! I also have a few Dragonfly sketches if you want to see them (don’t expect some really good quality art though)
IN THE FUTURE, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO INTERVIEW KISMET, THE EMPRESS’ RIGHT HAND AND THE OLDEST DRAGONFLY. SUBMIT YOUR QUESTIONS BELOW!
