I heaved and struggled as the strange humans continued to drag me to an ominous structure that looked too much like the entrance to a crypt.
They grunted and heaved and continued to shout some strange language I had no idea to make heads or tales with.
“Let me go!” I screamed, trying to bite their hands and arms.
A heavy blow landed on my stomach, and I felt the wind and sense knocked out of me. They quickly took advantage and shoved me into the ominous entryway and with a resounding slam I was left in total darkness.
I lay on the floor for several moments, reveling in the fact that I was alone, and wasn’t being touched, beaten, pinched, or shoved around.
Eventually I became aware that I could see somewhat due to a strange moss that glowed with a faint purple light.
I stood, the gritty ground below amplifying any noise in this deafening darkness. I walked over to the moss and noticed it shimmered slightly and was the same exact color as the strange mist that I went through just before I arrived in this crazy land.
I looked back to the door….blast….it was solid metal. I tested its heft….it wouldn’t budge….great.
I looked deeper into the crypt and started to see the outlines of human remains in the carved shelves of the walls, the smell of wet, mold, filth, and death now really registered in my senses now that my sight was severely compromised.
“Fuck, there’d better be a way out.” I whispered as I padded down the hall, taking a thigh bone from a dried skeleton with me.
After a few moments of walking steeply down an incline, it became very apparent that the crypt was in fact a labyrinthian catacomb. The sheer number of turns and intersections was mind boggling!
But more than that- something about the moss started to produce a strange effect on me. The darkness slowly gave way to an all-present purplish tint and glow. I could see in what must have been near-darkness like I could in a dimly lit room.
The grisly decor was now almost nothing but walls of bones, the skulls seeming to follow me as I walked about, every so often I would come across the corpse of a more recently expired human….maybe a few months old at best, all seeming to had the same fate befall them as myself.
Thankfully, I kept markers with each turn, but the more corpses I found in the halls, or slumped against the walls….. I seriously began to wonder if I was going to die down here.
A flutter of motion caught my eye and I turned…..someone was in the crypt with me? Someone alive?
“Hello? Who’s there?” I called out.
The figure turned to me and stretched both arms out, causing me to freeze and feel a chill erupt in my gut and spread to my entire body.
Oh shit!
A low moan escaped from its lips, letting me know that I indeed came across a zombie!
I took in a deep breath and counted to ten, making sure I wasn’t hallucinating, and to gauge how fast this creature was.
I exhaled, okay. Maybe not as bad as I initially thought. The creature was slow, almost shambling at a crawl towards me. I looked about and quickly marked a different passage and fast-walked away from its shuffling steps.
The layout of the catacombs changed, from walls of bone and the odd corpse on the ground, I was now in a maze of metal bar walls and metal sarcophagi. I paused at one and looked at the pictograms and almost puked at the depiction of showing a corpse rising and consuming the bodies of the still-living.
I noticed how the sarcophagi were banded shut with metal bars and glanced about and saw several more zombies milling about the metal cage maze. Thankfully, none of them noticed me yet, but I crouched low and wondered if there was a chance.
I looked down and noticed the stone floor gave way to a metal grate that I could see an eerie green light emanating from a deep chasm obscured by a strange fog.
Hmmmmm. How far does it go?
I picked up a skull and tossed it through a gap of the grate and listened….nothing….nothing….then, a dull clatter sounded far below.
A faint, but powerful scream sounded from far below and I felt a chill creep up my back and tripped all sorts of alarm bells in my head. Even worse! The zombies were looking about and sniffing the air, crap!
I started to turn back, to get away from the maze of cages, but almost on cue- the first zombie rounded the corner and was headed straight towards me!
I quickly decided to fight the female zombie and strode forwards, feinted to the right and swung around and took a mighty swing at its leg to trip it up.
But without even flinching or any miscalculation, the female zombie grabbed my thigh bone and crushed it in her hands. I ducked back and rolled just barely escaping, feeling her fingers slide over my coat, but not able to grasp on.
I rushed into the maze, trying to navigate around and through the walls, quickly barring the way behind me with one of the sarcophagi.
Thankfully the maze was a Hedge-Sandson Style. Easy enough to navigate, and I even managed to corral the other female zombies into a dead end that they wouldn’t get out of as long as they kept trying to use line-of-sight to get to me.
“Whew!” I exhaled and took a better look at the portion of the maze I was in.
The entire structure appeared to be an entry point to a large subterranean structure….but what could be down here?
I peered down through the grate and tried to see beyond the green mist.
"AAAAHHHHHH..."
I flinched back from the sudden scream just to my left and snapped to, and screamed myself.
A strange wild-looking woman with blood all over her body was shaking and pulling at the bars that separated us. Her long tongue lolled about dripping with a thick red fluid and her blood-red eyes were locked on me.
I looked about- there was nothing but grated floor and bars for walls, not even a metal sarcophagus to use.
I looked about and continued on my way. Thankfully she seemed only marginally smarter than the other zombies and stuck with line-of-sight to be near me.
With my heart pounding, and the sound of her screams and the moans of the zombies, I finally seemed to make headway at getting to a further portion of the maze that seemed to have a staircase.
“Man! Man! Man! Meat! Meat! Meat! Lonely! Lonely!Hungry! Starving! Eat!” The woman screamed, and screamed and screamed as she pulled and gnawed at the metal bars, finally warping a few with screeches of metal giving a more visceral sound to my terror.
“Shit! Shit!” Left or right? I looked and tried to discern how the path unraveled but her screams and screeching of metal kept interrupting my train of thought.
At last! I took off to the right just as she pulled the last bar between her and the inside of the maze.
She took off and I just barely barred her way with another metal sarcophagus. I turned, but screamed as I felt her hands close on my jacket and she yanked me back her mouth clamped down on my neck.
I screamed and pulled away, my neck exploded into a fierce sensation. I placed my hand to the spot and cried out feeling my skin burn, freeze, and tingle and my hand now sopping wet and red.
I tried my best to stem the blood and back slid away closer to the stairs, my legs were weak and my mind was filled with a peculiar terror. My heart pounded, and for some reason, my body decided that now was the best time to get a hardon.
She pushed the Sarcophagus away with a deafening metal screech. She straightened and looked at me, a triumphant smile on her face, almost seeming to savour the moment where she had at last gotten to me with no escape.
With a scream that seemed to shake the very fabric of reality she sprinted down towards me.
I screamed as well, desperate to get away, to get the door closed! Anything but this! Not like this! Not to be eaten alive by the undead!
I felt her body crash into mine and her teeth again clamped down on my neck. I felt a thick fluid flow from her mouth and over my chest and ears. This was it! I was dying! I tried to breathe but her teeth were too tightly clamped around me.
My sight grew dim as the last of my vision was of her tearing my clothes apart from my body, her screaming fading into a muffled noise and I closed my eyes.
