I walk out the front door, against my mother’s protests and that ‘everything’s fine.’ That was a lie. I needed to clear my head and think, so I went to the only place that provided silence in the otherwise bustle of the village: the graveyard. The lack of visitors didn’t surprise me, it was a cloudy afternoon and looked like it would rain soon. I sat against a tree, alone with my thoughts.
We had been harassed by a loan shark, somewhat of a literal one as they were a Mershark, and this time instead of the usual threats she gave my mother a black eye. It’s not like her life wasn’t rough enough, being a single mom and supporting me after dad walked out on us. The best she could be was a seamstress, yet despite her best efforts the markets would only accept her quilts, blankets and scarves for very low prices. It’s not like my position as a blacksmith’s apprentice was making anything easier.
We had been deep in debt for weeks now, maybe she was just better off without me. It wouldn’t be the first time such a thought crossed my mind. In fact, thoughts of ending my life began to flood my mind, simply getting some rope and tall enough tree, like this one, would do the job. I began to shudder, and shuddering soon became sobs.
In such a state I didn’t notice the rapidly charging footsteps, and was tackled to the ground by something large and furry. As my gaze meets my attacker I first assumed it to be some sort of mad woman, but her blackened skin, pointed ears, sharp claws, and both lustful and malicious glare told me she was a Hellhound.
She straddled me as she cupped my face, a tear running atop on of her fingers, “You look like you’ve seen a ghost, honey. Well, I’m no ghost, and am going to give you a better time than one ever could.”
I didn’t resist as her other paw tugged at me pants. I had no will to fight her. “Do what you want.” I simply say.
She tilts her head, “Huh, normally I’d love a submissive man, but aren’t you going to at least try something?”
“No. Go ahead, ravage me and toss me aside.”
The Hellhound flinches as if I struck her, “Uh, you okay? You got a sort of dead look in your eyes.”
“It’s none of your concern, just have your way with me.”
Though I didn’t look into her eyes, I could feel her gaze burrowing into me.
“No.” I look at her in surprise, her lustful expression is long gone and seems to be replaced with genuine worry. “Look, I don’t know what you’ve heard about Hellhounds, but we’re not heartless fucking machines. What’s bothering you?”
“Just want me to tell you so you can have your way with me then?” My tone was a bit harsher than I intended.
“Hey, I’m trying to help out! And no, I’m not going to have my way with you afterwards. The mood’s been killed be honest.”
“That’s not the only thing I’ll be killing.” I whisper under my breath, but from her ear twitch it was clear that she heard me.
She got off me, and sat next to me, giving me a patient look.
“Why do you want to help me?” I ask.
“Even Hellhounds have a heart, human. I’ve seen that look with people and mamonos alike, it sickens me to my core. Please, just talk to me.”
It was strange hearing such a patient and comforting voice come out of an otherwise infamous mamono. I took a deep breath and told her everything, and when I was done, she suddenly stood up.
“Go home. Hug your mom and believe her when she says everything’s fine, because trust me, everything will be fine.”
Before I could ask her what she was going to do, she ran off on all fours. I sat against the tree, the thoughts of suicide still in the back of my mind, but sudden thundering and rain quickly chased those thoughts away. I quickly ran back home to meet my mother who was worried sick about me, as always. We hugged each other and held one another as the storm ravaged the village outside. Despite how old I was she still held me close and ran her fingers through my hair, telling me everything was going to be alright. This time, I didn’t feel any doubt.
The next day started relatively normal. The blacksmith decided to give me the day off, as he forgot to fully close his door to his workshop and described the scene as “if a Sylph had an orgy with five men.” I couldn’t laze the day away however, as my mother decided to send me out grocery shopping while she got some much needed house cleaning done.
Before I could even step through the front door when I got back my mother wrapped me in a tight hug. She told me one of the loan shark’s representatives came and said the debt had been cleared. I didn’t to ask how or why, I knew the answer. Still, my mom was happy, and that was all that counted. It looked like she was no longer carrying a huge weight, and she was beaming again. She decided to send me back to the market to get a few treats to celebrate. I didn’t protest and headed back outside to the market.
Leaning against our nearby tree, arm crossed, was the Hellhound.
“See? Told ya everything was gonna be okay.” She said with a confident smirk.
I noticed the red stains on her hands, it was clearly blood. “You didn’t-”
“No, don’t worry. I just ‘ruffed’ her up a bit.” The Hellhound chuckled, “She won’t bother you or your mother anymore, you have my word. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go wash myself off by the river, you’re more than welcome to join, cutey.” She gave me a wink before running off to the river.
I didn’t follow her, and instead went to market for the sweets mom wanted me to by. Before I could hand the salesman my coins however, a hand clasp my shoulder and I saw the salesman’s face turn pale.
“Relax, I got you covered.” I recognized the voice as the Hellhound’s
The salesman quickly gave me the sweets, a shaking hand taking he coins from the Hellhound before stutteringly shooing us away.
“Why are you doing this?” I ask as I headed home, the Hellhound beside me.
“Why? Well that’s easy.” She got in front me and put a hand to my chest, drawing her face close, “It’s because…because…” her face suddenly turned red and she backed off, looking down. “Because…I need a place to stay! Yeah! How about it human? You kind of owe me after all.”
“Of course you can stay, if mom’s okay with it of course.” She seemed shocked by quick compliance.
As we walked in and my mom came to greet me she stopped in her tracks when she saw the Hellhound.
The Hellhound cleared her throat, “Uh, don’t worry miss. I mean no harm, just looking for a place to stay. Don’t worry, I can pull my own weight.”
My mother paused, staring at the Hellhound before slowly nodding, trying her best to give a welcoming smile and an “of course,” but the look in her eyes told the Hellhound ‘if you even touch my son I’ll turn you into a stuffed rug.’ Not that Hellhound flinched under such a stare, something told me given their infamous status she was used to that sort of treatment.
Fortunately, my mother seemed to relax after that, and began to make dinner. The Hellhound insisted on helping, but my mother brushed her off, telling her to relax.
“So, Ms…”
“Just call me Rebecca,”
“Rebecca, Thomas said you would be able to pull your own weight. What is it that you do?” My mother asked while we were having dinner.
“I work as an apothecary, granted I don’t really treat people, just make and sell the medicines they need. It pays very nicely, so don’t worry, I’ll pay rent.”
My mom seemed shocked, “Uh, thank you but, don’t worry, rent won’t be necessary.”
“I insist, as thanks for letting me stay here. That loan shark might not be bothering you no more, but I’m not about to freeload on you guys because of your extra money.”
Mom tilted her head, “How did you know about our loan shark problems?”
Rebecca stammered, “Uh, because Thomas told me. We just met yesterday, poor guy seemed down and I asked what was up.” She tastefully decided to leave out the part where she nearly sexually assaulted me.
“I see.” Was all my mom said as she siped her drink. I felt myself shrink as she glared at me from her glass.
“Ma’am, there no need to be angry at Thomas. I was the one who pressed for information.”
“Please, just call me Ms. Annabelle. And I’m not mad, but rather disappointed,” mom looked at me “you should know better than to drag people into our problems.”
“Why? How else was I supposed to help?”
“Help how?” My mom asked.
Rebecca stammered, “By…living here. Thanks to my job, I bet the rent I can provide help you-”
“Rebecca,” my mother began, in a tone I knew and dreaded, “you’re a bad liar. What are you not telling me?”
Before she could answer we heard a loud knock on our door. My mom stood up to get it but not before giving one last glance at Rebecca and walking out of sight to the door. Before either of us could say anything, we heard multiple footsteps rush in and a shriek from my mom.
Rushing to the door I was met with a horrifying sight, one large man was holding my other close to her, a large knife pressed to her throat, the other was pushing in a wheelchair, a wheelchair carrying the loan shark.
Even with her bruises and scratches, she still carried an air of intimidation, this time clearly mixed with hate, “Mrs. Annabelle, investing in some security I see? Thinking you can just scare me off?”
“What are you talking about?” My mother asked.
The Mershark gave her a slash across her face, “Don’t play dumb with me you bitch! Thinking this Hellhound here would scare me off did you?!”
My mother looked at me, her tears mixing with her blood, “Thomas, what have you done?”
The Mershark turned to me, “It was your idea?” She motioned to the man behind her, “Break this little shit’s legs. And you,” She motioned to the man holding my mother, “Make sure she watches.”
I felt something rush passed me and get between the man and me, it was Rebecca. The Mershark seemed a little shocked, but kept her composure.
“Still around? Figured you were just hired and fucked off.”
“And I thought you’d just move on after I scared you off. Do you just enjoy bullying poor families?”
The Mershark raised her hands up, “Hey, I’m just doing my job. This bitch owes me money, and I just come to collect. And no, I don’t just ‘bully’ poor families as you put it. I collect from the rich, poor, and everyone in between. Such a business is very lucrative, let’s me afford all kinds of wonderful trinkets.”
“And hired thugs,” Rebecca says, glaring at the man holding my mom at knife point.
“I call them associates. Speaking of which, I don’t what this family is paying you, but why not work for me. You’d make a great guard dog.”
Rebecca looked pissed at that statement, it didn’t help that the Mershark had a shit eating grin as she said that.
“I’m no dog!” Rebecca says as she charges at the Mershark, shoving the goon out of the way. The Mershark suddenly reaches into her pocket and throws a bottle at Rebbecca. She can’t get out of the way and bottle shatters on impact, releasing water that seems to evaporate on contact. Rebecca collapses and slides to the Mershark’s fin.
Rebecca’s cry of pain and the sizzling noises emanating from where the water touches gives me a stomach dropping revelation as to what it was.
“What’s wrong dog? It’s just a little holy water.” The Mershark chuckles. Rebecca reaches for the Mershark’s fin, but she moves it up and out of her grasp before slamming it back down on the back of Rebecca’s head with a sickening thud. She starts to laugh as she continues to do this.
The thug continues his approach to me. I run to the kitchen and grab a knife, and while I hold it up to him trying to be threatening, my shaking grip tells him I couldn’t harm him even if I tried. The thug chuckles before punching me in the face; that alone nearly knocks me out as I fall to the floor. The thug drags me out to the main hall and my mother begins to cry. Rebecca weakly turns her head and goes wide eyed as she sees me.
“Well, what are waiting for? Break his legs.” The Mershark says with sadistic glee. The thug raises one of my legs up, reading to kick it out of place. My mother is screaming, begging him to stop.
“Wait, please.” Rebecca says weakly.
The Mershark raises her hand to motion the thug to stop. “What’s up sweetie? Re-considering my offer as a guard dog?”
“J-just let me kiss him, just once.”
The Mershark laughs, “I’m not killing him sweetie, just roughing him up a bit. But you know what, if you prove to me you’ll be my guard dog, I’ll let you do it.”
“I- I’ll be your guard dog.” Rebecca muttered.
“What was that? Speak up dog!”
“I’ll be your guard dog!” Rebecca spoke those words with such disdain that it seemed like it gave her more pain than the holy water.
“Bark for me, dog.”
When Rebecca hesitated, the thug raised my leg up, but then Rebecca quickly made pained, pitiful, barking sounds.
The Mershark laughed and clasped her hands, “Good dog. Fine, I’ll grant your wish.” She used her shark fin to push Rebecca to me. While I didn’t resisted as she crawled to me and kissed me, I was confused as to her request. Once our lips touched, she pulled me into a passionate kiss before standing up, the burning holy water seemed to have vanished.
The Mershark tilted her head, “What’s this? Did you steal some of him spirit energy to heal youself? But that was some high grade holy water.” She clased her hands together and put on a tacky smile, “You must really love him! Typical Hellhounds, the first dick they jump on is love at first sight to them.”
“I wouldn’t say we’re that fickle, but that’s not important. I’m your guard dog right? Guess I need to prove my worth.”
Before the Mershark could reply, Rebbeca took the head of the thug next to me and smashed his head into the wall before giving him a bone crunching punch in the ribs that caused him to collapse. Before the other thug could react, Rebecca closed the distance between them in an instant and punched him in the face, her fist just brushing past my mother’s face. Releasing her from his grip, Rebecca delivered a few powerful gut punches against the wall, before picking him up and tossing him to the other end of the hall, his body denting the dry wood.
“I think I’d do a much better job than them you know. Don’t worry though, I’m an apothecary, so I can fix all those broken bones and internal bleeding.” The Mershark tossed another bottle of holy water but Rebecca caught this one. “But as for you, I don’t think even the greatest doctors can in the kingdom will be able to fix you.” She crushed the glass in her hand, wincing as the water burned her, but other than was seemingly unaffected.
She grabbed and lifted the Mershark by the collar, “If you know a thing or two about Hellhounds, there are two things we don’t like.” She gave a slash across the Mershark’s face, “One: people thinking we can be tamed like dogs.” Rebecca let go of the Mershark and on the way down delivered a powerful knew to her gut, causing to fall to the ground in a wheezing heap, “Two: harming the people we love.”
The Mershark tried to crawl to her wheelchair, but Rebecca grabbed her by the fin and yanked her back, stepping on the back of her head as she did so.
“And if you do the latter, nothing, neither Heaven nor Hell will save you from our wrath.”
“You! Hellhound! Stop right now!” A soldier came in, sword drawn.
“Yes, please! Get this beast off me!” The Mershark cried, “She’s trying to kill me and this family!”
My mother quickly moved and gripped the soldiers arm, “No, please! She’s just helping us! The Mershark was the one assaulting us.”
What followed was seemingly a small platoon of soldiers entering our home, followed by some doctors to treat our injuries, though the thugs needed to go to a doctor’s shop to get the necessary treatment. After being deemed lucid enough, a captain came to question us as to what happened. Neighbors had heard shouting and sounds of struggling and got the attention of the guards and wanted to know what happened.
While my mother, Rebecca, and I all told the same story, only Mershark tried to spin, claiming she was a family friend as that Rebecca had just shown up to assault us. Fortunately, they didn’t buy her story, it didn’t help that one of the guards thought she looked like an infamous loan shark, and after digging up some information, found she match the description. She was imprisoned shortly after.
My mother and I’s lives returned to normal a few weeks after that, though this time it now included Rebecca, a great contributor to the my mother and I, and great friend, and now, if I accept her proposal, a loving wife. Which of course I’m accepting.
