Write a story about a monster girl's family
Maybe KC didn't want to think about family dynamics that involved a human son, which is why he decided that all monsters gave birth to more monsters. But I thought, wouldn't it be funny to see a family dealing with one of the more unusual kinds of monsters in the encyclopedia. Might come across as more weird than I meant to. I wanted to try writing about some characters who were further along in their relationship, with a kid and all the implications that would have for a monster/human couple.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
He snuck up to the window, wedging his fingers under the space he’d left for himself before leaving earlier. As quietly as possible, he lifted the window and climbed up into his room. As he was closing it, he winced at the lights clicking on. “Do you have any idea how late you are?” His mother was standing in the doorway, her large curled horns making her stern glare even more intimidating. Her great bat wings were draped over his father standing next to her in the doorway, her tail twitching. But he was still trying not to make eye contact as they were both covered in a sheet.
“Could you guys please wear something if you’re trying to talk to me?” He asked, looking at the floor. His mother huffed as they both left and returned in a slightly more dressed state, both putting underwear and his mother wearing a shirt. “I really wish you wouldn’t try to confront me in the middle of...you know”. He was still trying not to make eye contact.
“And I’m not happy about you staying out so late”. She replied, her heavy gray tail still swishing back and forth.
“Why does it matter how late I’m out? You guys are both up from like 6 pm to 6 am anyway. There’s like 4 more hours until you go to sleep.
“It’s not that simple, Richard. We told you that you could stay out with your friends but you had to be back by 11 pm, midnight on the weekends. And you still have to be at school tomorrow”.
“Richard, your mother wanted to go out and look for you. She was very worried about where you were”.
“Are you sure you weren’t too busy…” He couldn’t finish his retort.
“Too busy with what?” she asked sternly.
“You know,” he was mumbling, “between you and dad”. A sound of indistinguishable anger rose from his mother.
“Is that what you think? I was going to fly out there until I found you and brought you home myself. Your father convinced me to wait for you to come back. You wouldn't even answer your phone”. Richard couldn’t think of anything else, so he went stone silent. His father sighed.
“We just want to know you’re safe. You should get some sleep”. He gave Richard a smile and a pat on the shoulder. His mom reached out and hugged him tightly before he could protest.
“I love you, Richard”.
“Good night”. He said. After his parents walked down the hall, he closed his door, turned on an ambient noise cd and turned off the lights.
---
“Hey Rick! How’d getting home last night go?” Richard looked out to the other side of the school parking lot, where his friend was calling to him.
“Jaden!” He gave him a high five. “That’s the thing about having a mamono mom who’s also nocturnal. She wasn’t happy. You’re so lucky your parents are asleep at night!”
“Oh yeah, your mom is big! Probably be really scary if she was mad or-”
“I don’t know”, their friend Ray interrupted, “Kinda cool to see your mom angry with how she looks already”.
“Dude. It’s also really weird for my friends to be talking about how much they like my mom”.
“I’m sorry man! She’s just…” he faltered at Rick’s glare.
“Just my luck to be the only one of my friends who doesn’t have a human mom. Anyway, they didn’t tell me I was grounded or anything, so I think we might be ready to go to that party this weekend”. He led his friends into the school as the first electronic bell signaled the beginning of the first period.
“For sure! There’s going to be a lot of girls there, maybe even from other schools”. Ray said as he followed Rick and Jaden.
“Like from the all mamono school?” Jaden asked,
“The very same”.

A few days after the most recent confrontation with his parents, and going to the party with his friends, Rick walked downstairs to the kitchen. He made breakfast, and ate silently.
“Good morning Richard”. His mother said, as she entered the kitchen with his father.
“Morning, son. Mmm, bagels. Don’t mind if I do”. They both took one and began preparing their own meal.
“Aren’t you both usually asleep at this time?”
“Well, we wanted to be able to get to your school tonight so we could see your work.
“The art fair isn't until 6. You’d have had time”.
“But we wanted to have breakfast with you this morning”, his mother said. Rick shrugged.
“It’s just you both look really tired”.
“Never easy to adjust one’s sleeping habits so suddenly. But don’t worry, we’ll be there”. His father said.
---
At the school that night, Rick was walking through the halls, browsing the students’ art displays. Landscape paintings, self portraits and other works were stuck on the walls. Works of wood and metal stood in the glass cases. He was nearing his own display when he spotted his teacher, admiring the clay pots that her students had created.
“Hi Ms. Nielsen”, he said.
“Ah, hello Richard. I was hoping to see some of my students tonight. I wanted to tell you, and your parents if possible, how impressed I am with your progress this semester”.
“Thanks. Uh, my parents are planning on being here pretty soon…” he looked around and down the hallway.
“Well I hope they can make it in time, I saw an awful lot of traffic on my way here”.
“Oh traffic isn’t really an issue for them”, he replied, as he saw his parents approaching him. They smiled and waved, walking right up. His teacher was about to ask, when she caught a look at his parents and tried to control her surprise.
“Hello, you must be Richard’s teacher?” His mother asked.
‘Yes, hi, I’m Barb”. She smiled and shook his mother’s hand.
“I’m Tierra”.
“Shane”, his father said, shaking his teacher’s hand. “Wow, these pots look pretty good as far as I can tell. You must have worked hard on these”.
“Yeah, it took a lot of practice to even make them into some kind of shape. They kept falling apart”.
“And I just wanted to meet as many of my students’ families as I could, to congratulate them on their work”, Ms. Nielsen said.
“Well, Richard is as solid as they come”, his father replied. His mother giggled, and Rick couldn’t help but roll his eyes at his dad’s joke.
---
“Yeah, I’ll be over soon”. Rick hung up his phone, turning to call out to his parents from the other room. “Mom, Dad, I’m going to Jaden’s house for the night. Him and me and Ray are going to hang out on Saturday, so I’ll be back tomorrow night”.
“Hmm, are you really going to hang out with your friends the whole weekend?” His mother asked, sticking her head out around the corner.
“Uh, yeah. Why is there a problem?”
“Oh I don’t think so. It’s juuuuust”, she looked at him, then back into the other room. “Would you tell him dear?” His father walked into the doorway and put his arm around his wife.
“Your mother told me she’s been smelling a bit of mana on you recently. We’re not upset, we just thought there might be someone else you’ve been spending time with”. Richard cursed under his breath.
“Uh, yeah I guess it would be hard to hide. Her name’s Maia. We were going to spend the night at her house. But I’m going to be sleeping in the guest room”, he added quickly.
“How wonderful”, his mother said, a dreamy expression appearing on her face. “What kind of girl is she?”
“God, she’s really kind, and clever, and assertive, and uh, oh she’s a lamia”.
“Well hopefully we’ll get to meet her soon. All that matters is you’re happy with her”. His dad smiled, and waved as Richard walked out the door to his car. “And what do you think of this girl, honey?” He asked his wife.
“Well, it can be hard to make predictions about a girl just based on her species”, she mused. “Buuuut, lamia types are known for being mmm, how should I put it, attached? But I’m not worried about Richard being unfaithful. However, I’ll bet there’s a fifty/fifty at most on whether they’re sleeping in different beds tomorrow. And since he’s staying at someone else’s place tonight, want to go spend some time together?”
“I thought you’d never ask”, he replied, giving her a kiss.
---
Rick knocked on the door to Maia’s house, and it blew open as a few hundred pounds of snake girl sprang out and crashed into him. Rick squawked, but fell down into his girlfriend’s coils.
“Hi Rick! I’m so happy to see you. This is going to be the best night ever!” She picked him up, smooched him on the cheek, and carried him inside. Rick managed to untangle himself, but her tail remained coiled around his arm.
“Hey Maia, I’m happy to see you too. But remember, we’ve got to study tonight. Where are your parents?”
“Oh, study? Sure. Tomorrow. Um, they had some things they had to take care of, so they just told us we could help ourselves to whatever’s in the fridge and to make sure to lock the doors before we went to sleep”. Rick’s stomach dropped, and he glanced at Maia nervously. “Oh but don’t worry, I won’t jump on you. Again. I’m kind of nervous too. Do you want anything to drink? We have orange juice, milk, and some special stuff I got from my mom’s room”. She pulled out a small bottle of pink liquid from her pocket. Rick stared at it, as Maia continued to wrap her tail around his waist.
“I think I’ll just have some orange juice”.
Just in case it wasn't clear, Rick's mom is a gargoyle. She has all the typical features of a succubus type monster, can fly, nocturnal, there's a lot of stone related wordplay.
