Dana quietly opened the door, walking through the dark house. Her disguised human form allowed her to creep up the stairs. Searching for the door she wanted, she found it on the right wall. Opening it, she heard the sound of soft breathing. She could see much more easily in the dark, so she could easily see the man laying in his bed, fast asleep. Walking over to the side of the bed, she resumed her own form, necessary for using her full range of powers. A violet centaur body, and her preferred purples robes and hood, complete with a large scythe. She aimed the blade at his head, and began to draw it through the air, tugging open the gate into his mind. She stepped into the gate, traveling through the void searching for his conscience. Navigation was hazy and slow, she felt like she was wading through deep water. “He must be a really heavy sleeper”. She said. Finally, she located a fragment of his mind. “I can use this”. She nudged and teased at it, trying to get it into her control so she could communicate with him via his dreams. But it wouldn’t respond. The thing remained completely motionless, refusing to bend to her will. “Hey, what’s the deal?” She wrestled with it, but no matter what she did, it wouldn’t respond. Finally, exhausted from her efforts and nothing to show for it, she left the man’s dreamscape and returned to his room. She glanced at him, and muttered “Stupid Robert”. Resuming her human form, she left his room, walked down and out of the house. Back at home, she took a spirit energy supplement, and went to sleep.

“So how did it go last night?” Dana’s friend Julia, a werebat, was asking her about her previous night’s plans, at the office the following day.

“I tried to get into his dreams. But I couldn’t even find him. It’s like there wasn’t anything there”, she answered quietly, trying not to catch the attention of their coworkers.

‘What do you mean? Isn’t the point that you can get inside his head because he’s asleep?”

“It’s hard to explain. I can usually walk right in and manipulate their dreams, but this was different. I don’t know what’s going on”.

“Sounds like he’s a tough nut to crack”, Julia responded with a grin. “I think you ought to give it a few more tries, you like him right?”

“Mhm”.

“Or you could just ask him after work. He’s right here in the same building!” Dana gave her friend a mortified look in response. “Hey, it might be the simplest method. You’re the only woman working in the office whom Robert would think is human. He might be more receptive”.

“But I can’t just never tell him about being a monster girl”, she protested.

“I don’t know, maybe it was a bad idea to pretend you were a human after you got hired”.

For days, Dana tried to access Robert’s dreams. She searched for other fragments, but the work was slow. She tried messing with the few she found, but they were just as stubborn. But her persistence paid off. After a long night of patiently prodding at the fragment, she found a point of access. She stepped inside, molding it to her will. She chose a field of soft grass, dotted by variable flowers. She took her favored dream form, a human woman who looked similar to herself but was far more confident in her ability to get people’s attention. She walked through the field and located the single tree where she had planned to meet Robert. There he was, resting peacefully…

“You’re asleep even in your dreams?” She exclaimed. The shout was far less dignified than would fit a woman of her appearance, but she couldn’t help it. Robert was still fast asleep. She smiled. This was still far more manageable. She knelt down beside him, placing his head in her lap. She started to stroke his head. “Wake up, my dear”. Her soft voice conveyed a number of alluring promises, but he wouldn’t budge. She started to prod and poke him. When he wouldn’t respond, she tugged at his clothes and tried to awaken him with some more specific stimulation, but he still wouldn’t move. Beside herself with frustration, she let out the loudest scream she could manage. It echoed across the deserted plain. Dana left Robert’s dreamscape, feeling as though she hadn’t accomplished anything at all.

---

After relaying her story to Julia, Dana wondered if there was anything else she could do. But Julia hadn’t given up. With both sitting in the break room, Julia looked over to the few coworkers who’d gathered there to eat lunch, Robert included.

“Dana, I had the strangest dream last night!” She said loudly, to get everyone’s attention. I was flying through the sky with my husband in a pumpkin carriage! How about that!” The other men had started to listen.

“Couldn’t you do that by yourself?” Alexander asked.

“Oh but it was so much different, we were soaring over the land and there was a bright full moon and it was just the two of us…”

“Suppose I wouldn’t know what flying is like”. He replied.

“And what about you, Robert? I love to hear about people’s dreams, they always seem to reveal something about you”.

“Oh I don’t really have dreams”.

“None?”

“Or maybe I don’t remember them. Asleep one moment, then I wake up the next day. It makes my sleep pretty peaceful. Alexander?”

“Last night I dreamt I was on a great ship. I was sailing the seven seas, when I ran into a kraken. I tried to duel her with a sword, but she had 8 swords. It seems even in my dreams people like to play tricks on me”. He delivered the entire story in a deadpan voice. Everyone chuckled.

“And you, Dana?” Robert asked, looking over to the woman sitting next to Julia, her human figure looking slightly at odds with the werebat sitting next to her.

“Uh, last night I helped rescue a tree from a kitten”. Everyone burst into laughter. “Or was it a kitten from a tree?” Dana mumbled, realizing her mistake.

“That’s quite the funny imagination you have”, Robert said with a smile. “I wonder what it would be like to have the kinds of dreams you all have”.

---

That would explain how hard it is to get to him”, Dana said to herself, as she sat under the tree next to Robert. Despite her struggle, Dana had found some renewed confidence in her abilities, and was now making regular visits to Robert’s house. She continued to try to wake him, changing the tranquil field to various louder sceneries. A carnival, a concert, a stormy cliffside, even conjuring a monster girl brothel, but nothing seemed to work. One night, she arrived at her usual spot, only to find Robert was missing. “Is this my chance?” She asked, wondering where he was. As she looked around, a large forest appeared in front of her. The trees were tightly packed together, gnarled branches and dead bark painting a frightening picture. She strolled over to the woods, and began to cut at the trees. She had no real need for the scythe in manipulating dreams, but found it to be helpful for giving her a sense of control. As she made her way further into the woods, she located Robert, wide awake.

“Help!” He cried out, looking straight ahead and unable to see her. He was miming the actions of running, but his legs were moving at a torturously slow pace, barely allowing him to cover any ground. Behind him was a shapeless gray mass, oozing closer and closer.

“Being chased and can’t run away”, she mused. She swung her scythe forward, and the mass turned into clouds of colorful butterflies. But he continued to run. “Sir”, she said to him, “there’s nothing to worry about. Your fears are gone”.

“It’s getting closer!” He said in a panicked voice, as if he was unable to see the butterflies. And he continued to run.

“Then I will carry you away from here”. She tried to lift him into her arms, but he struggled.

“We have to get out of here!” It was as if his panicked mind refused to acknowledge any changes she made. But Dana had one more idea, and prayed it would work. She took her own form, a centaur’s body, and stood in front of him.

“Please, climb on my back. I will run so fast that it couldn’t possibly catch you”. This time he seemed to respond, reaching for her back. She boosted him up so he could sit on her back, and he wrapped his arms around her waist. Dana tried to control her embarrassment at being held like this by a man, and started to trot away, unhindered by Robert’s own obstructions. She broke into a gallop, through the narrow gap in the trees, and soon emerged from the woods, banishing them behind her as she returned to the sunny field.

“Are we safe?” Robert asked.

“I promise that nothing will harm you if you’re with me”. He slid off her back and stumbled over to the tree to rest on the ground.

“Oh god. Thanks for helping me. But who are you?”

“Oh I’m just a little spirit here to help you out. In fact”, she shifted into her human form. There’s something else I can do for you”. She sauntered over to kneel down beside him. Before he could say a word she kissed him. She moaned, clinging onto him, leaning further into his body until he fell over, she parted for a chance to breathe but then she went right in again, hugging him tightly and probing his mouth with her own. She realized how badly she’d been wanting Robert. He managed to pry her off after a bit of trouble.

“Wow, that was quite a kiss! It felt like you needed that a lot more than me”.

“O-oh well, there’s more where that came from”. She tried to regain control by showing off her chest, taking his hand and placing it on her chest. Leaned over to push him on his back, and made a show of disrobing herself before slowly easing off his pants. He watched her with a sign of anticipation, and the moment she had been waiting for had arrived. Joined with Robert, the feeling of his spirit energy far surpassing the simple satisfaction she got from supplements. Dana rode Robert far longer than she intended to, keeping his energy going through the night. Soon she realized how close it must be to morning, and she allowed him one go before giving a more gentle kiss. “I’m sorry, my dear, but I must be going soon. I cannot visit you when the sun is up. But I hope you found this experience enjoyable”.

“Woo boy. That sure was something! Didn’t know I could go that long. But I definitely enjoyed it. Do you think we’ll see each other again?”

“I’m sure we will”, she said as she waved and began to walk through the field, away from the tree. It was easy to change the scenery so she was obscured from his view, and Dana walked through the portal, and exited out into Robert’s room. She turned around to take one look at Robert’s sleeping face, when his eyes opened. She tried to stifle her shocked reaction. She stood still, hoping that he would somehow fail to notice her. But Robert took one look and sat up.

“Do I know you?” She stared at him silently.

“N-no, no, definitely not, I was just here to…”

“Dana?” She put her hand to her mouth.

“What would make you think that?”

“Oh, you’re definitely Dana. From work! Friends with Julia. Yep, I recognize you. So, what are you doing in my room?”

“Well, I’m not actually human and. I needed it. Energy…”

“Well, I can see that now. You must have been hiding your form at work?”

“Yes, the boss told me it was fine after I got hired”.

“There was a bit of a question in the office about the only human woman working there. I guess you must have been that very pretty lady in my dreams, too?”

“Maybe. But you weren’t supposed to wake up so fast”.

“Usually when I have some sort of bad dream, it’s right between wakefulness and sleep. Maybe you prolonged my period of sleep”.

“Anyway, I’m really sorry, but I promise I’ll go right now”, she started to turn to the door.

“Dana. Wait”. She looked to see him standing up and walking around so he could face her front. She looked at him as he stared into her eyes. Then he kissed her. She made a sound of surprise, fumbling a little, unused to physical touch in her own body. “You gave me a killer night. And I think it just makes me want you in the real world even more”.

“Are you sure? I don’t have as much control as in your dreams”.

“Positive”.

---

Dana walked into the office in her human form, but this time she was hand in hand with Robert. They passed Julia, who took one look at both of them and gave a big grin. Dana wondered how she was supposed to accomplish anything that day. “Dana, are you sure you want to keep that human form?” Robert asked.

“Yeah, it makes it easier to get around at work”.

“Alright. But how would you feel trying out your uh, real form outside of work? I think it’s the prettiest look you have”. Dana blushed.
