Week 22: Update 7

“Alright men! Prep your weapons and check that you are loaded with as much KO darts as godly possible. Cause we just got a request that even the pansy military couldn’t handle with their fancy bullshit equipment. All I gotta say is that this is gonna be one hell of an op.”

I sat there literally on the edge of shitting the diaper I call my pants at one in the morning. What mamono are we going to be sent to handle this time? I really hope it isn’t a Baphomet. Please god don’t let it be a Baphomet. Those little girls could lock on top of you and be pounding down her hips on your crotch before you can even hear her say Onii-chan…… Why th hell did I sign up for the Mamono Handler Corps? Oh yeah…. I was a month behind on rent and this was the only job willing to hire a man who dabbled in firearms and had no work experience since Caesar rose to power. God or Chief God, please save my soul. My mind was not helped as the captain gave the briefing.

“We got ourselves one hell of an op. Ten blocks of Manhattan stuffed to the brim with one of the nastiest MGs alive, Devil Bugs. Now I will not put anyone down for wanting to jump out of this vehicle before we get there, but you would be losing a $250,000 cut on this mission. Anyone thinking about jumping out now?”

I can’t believe what I’m hearing. I could live for a long ass time without worrying about paying my rent with that money. I could even buy a few new items for my piece of shit apartment, maybe even get a better one. But on the other hand, I've got ten blocks full of Devil Bugs to handle…. Is this what they call a suicide mission? Cause it sure feels like one. I really want to jump out right now, but the money kept me seated. I felt the vehicle move as it headed for Manhattan.

I know this is cliche, but the drive there felt like an eternity. I don’t know how many times I checked my rifle and the metric fuck ton of ammo that I was carrying. I felt heavy, sweaty, and worst of all, scared. Wrapped in my thoughts, I didn't hear the sound of the APC crossing the bridge into the city. Suddenly, I was wrenched back into reality by our commanding officer's orders. “We have been given 10 blocks of this city to do our job. Find and shoot everyone of the fuckers you come across. The KO darts we are equipped with should keep them knocked out for a cool 14 hours. Don’t go spraying your weapon about in panic, conserve your bloody ammo and aim to hit. Anon, you’re on point. I will stay with the vehicle and be here when you are ready to be extracted.”

We come to a stop and I shuffle out of the vehicle. I hide the fear on my face, but my feet betray me as I almost trip getting out of the APC and put my feet upon hard asphalt. I see empty military jeeps with KO HMGs, every single one one of them empty. Where did their occupants go? I step up to the first building with a squad of five men behind me, each one despising the idea of being the first one to enter. I open the door to find that this building is an apartment complex with about a dozen rooms. It’s deathly quiet as we search the rooms with flashlights, praying to whatever deity is up there that we find nothing. Whatever answered, I thank him as we find that this building is untouched along with its basement. We exit this building and mark it with a red X, to show it was checked. We continued on like this through a laundromat, a deli, various restaurants, and a dry cleaner store, but we found nothing.

We were walking down the street when one of the men finally said something, “This is some spooky shit Anon. Where are they?”  I didn’t know where they were, but when I went to answer him, I noticed something. “Wasn’t there 6 of us?” The men quickly tensed up and looked at each other. “There is only five of us! Jenkins is missing.” How in the hell did we lose him? When did we lose him!?” I was panicking. That was when we heard it. Gunshots from a KO dart rifle and screams. Jenkins came running around the corner running toward us spraying his rifle backwards, but we weren't listening to him anymore. The skittering of legs was faint at first, but it got steadily louder, vibrating the ground as it got closer. What I saw come around that corner could only be called a tidal wave. There were dozens of them, maybe even hundreds crawling along the road, over the cars, along the buildings towards our position with Jenkins maintaining little distance from them. He barely made it ten feet around the corner before the wave of chitin and flesh engulfed him. I could only muster one word, “RUN!” I clamp my finger on the trigger of my rifle as hard as possible, putting 700 rounds a minute of KO darts into the horde. The men ran as hard as they could down the street. I heard my gun click empty, leaving a barely dwindled flood coming towards my position. Oh God…… I ran after the men, fear adding speed to my sprint. I caught up with my squad mates faster than anybody should have. I ran right past them to the end of the street. What I saw at the end would make any person wet their pants. A literal wall of Devil Bugs 15 feet high, blocking all available exits in every direction. Everyone one of them lusfully licking their lips while smiling triumphantly at having trapped their prey. I did what any man would have done. I prayed to God, I asked for my mommy, and I started to cry. My men panicked with me, tears in their eyes, firing every round we had til our weapons were dry and our sanity drained. When the firing stopped, the walls came down. They approached us slowly, savoring our inevitable capture. The squad mate who questioned me was the first to go as he jumped into the wave with nothing to lose. We didn’t even hear him scream. This wasn’t worth it, much less for 250 grand. How am I going to get out of here? What am I going to do? My scream was halted as one of them crawled upon me and put a hand over my mouth. She put a chitin finger to her mouth and pushed forth a sound that chilled me to the bone, “Shhh….” It all went  black as they covered me in their bodies…….

I shot up from my bed, eyes bloodshot from that hellish experience. “Oh thank god! It was just a dream. It was such a realistic dream though.” I wipe my eyes while turning on the lamp by the bed. As I open my eyes, I am met with many familiar faces. They all ask the same question in unison, “What is it honey?” I screamed……
