an adult Harpy that is trying to overcome her fear of flying. Her mother and friends are there to help, but she doesn’t really make that much progress… she’s getting there tho.
I like writing ones that deal with more friendly relationships than romantic ones.
This was a joy to write and easy too!
Hope you like it!

“It’s okay, honey.” I said, stroking the head and neck of our newest adopted family member.
“Aaaahhh! Ma! Ma! Hup! Hup! Huuuuhhaaa!” She shrieked and shied away from the edge of the wooden platform.
I sighed, wishing the Mindflayer healer would come soon. This was the third Harpy prisoner we had to help rehabilitate from the Order. And this one was by far the most damaged.
“It’s okay, sweehart.” I cooed and took her in my arms and laid upon the ground with her as she sobbed.
“Mama! Oh! Oh! Mama!” She cried, snuggling into my chest.
“Shhhh, it’s okay dear. Mommy is here.” I cooed while I stroked her head and face.
I gritted my teeth to think of how badly the Order treated this Harpy prisoner. When we first got her, all her feathers were pulled, she was mistreated horribly and covered in filth. She had just gotten her flight feathers in, but was terrified of heights…..hmmmm.
“Bath? Do you want a bath?” I said, tilting the Harpy who I came to call Telle’
Her face broke out into a huge smile. “Bath! Water!”
I wrapped my wing around her shoulders and led her away from the platform. “It’s okay sweetie, let’s go to the deep pool.”
“Any luck today, Karin?” Molly called out as we walked over to the deep pool.
I shook my head, “No. Say- did your husband and Mary’s husband come back yet? I could ask them a favor with their magic.”
“Actually yes! When do you want them to meet you?”
I hugged Telle’ closer and covered her face with my wing. “In about two hours. Thank you.”
.
We approached the deep spring pool that was always cold, and so crystal clear you could see to the bottom about a hundred tarks down.
I smiled as I watched Tesse’ squeal and splash in the water. Gulping it down and kicking her legs. ”Clean! Clean! So clean!” Tesse’ cried out, splashing me a little.
“Yes! It is very clean.” I said shushing her and sitting her at the edge. “Can I show you something?”
Tesse’s face suddenly lost its good humor and she became afraid. “No!” She screamed, hiding her face behind her wing.
“It’s in the water!” I said with a smile.
“Water?” Tesse’ squeaked and peeked as I cast my simple illusion.
I jumped in the pool and floated at the top with my wings spread wide.
Tesse’ gasped as she peered at the illusion, seeing me “soar” high above the ground that the interior of the pool now projected.
“Water holds me up, so can the air.” I said in a soothing voice. “Come with me.” I said, holding out my forelimb.
Tesse trembled, but she took my forelimb and slid back into the water. She flailed and held tight onto me…..perfect.
“Watch this, keep looking at me, dear.” I murmured as I grabbed her and casted a spell to make me more buoyant and held Tesse’ above the surface of the water with my talons and forelimbs.
Tesse’ screamed as it now appeared she was a full Yebeth above the ground and being held aloft by my talons and forelimbs.
“NO!” She screamed. “NO! NO! NO! NO!”
“Breathe, Tesse’.” I cooed. “Just breathe.”
.
Tesse’ hyperventilated and flapped her wings in desperation, but I refused to let go. Her panicked filled eyes finally found mine and sharpened into focus.
“Yes….look at me.” I said in a gentle voice. “You will not be hurt, you are not in the sky. It is pretend.”
“Pretend?” Tesse squeaked.
I nodded and let go of one of her talons and guided it to the water. “See? The water is still there.”
Tesse’ exhaled and her wings drooped a little. I felt her body relax and I repositioned her so she could see more of the illusionary ground far below.
“This is in your blood. Isn’t it beautiful?” I said, looking at the wonderment filling her face. “Spread your wings, honey….feel your muscles stretch!”
She looked at me and nodded and extended her wings to full length; revealing herself to be a Partridge Harpy, her tawny brown and black markings contrasted her pale skin and violet eyes.
“Doesn't that feel good?”
“Yes. Feel good.” Tesse sighed. I felt her body tense and lock into glide mode….yes! Perfect! Her instincts were taking over!
“Good afternoon, Karin! Molly said you wanted to see us?”
“EEEEEK! MAN!” Tesse’ screamed and fell into the water, thrashing and sputtering to get to the edge.
I quickly rushed to the edge and tackled Tesse’ to the ground and held her still with my wings over her face.
“Yes! Thank you Mark! Sorry you had to see that- hold still Tesse’ they aren’t going to hurt you!” I looked up at Mark and Robert. “Could you two be invisible for this? Please? Tesse’ isn’t too trusting of men yet.”
The both looked at each other and Robert nodded. “I’ll also make it so only you can hear us.” He said, raising his hands and they winked out from sight.
.
.
“Tesse’ calm down! They are gone! No one is going to hurt you!” I cooed and let go of her.
“Smell! Still Smell man!” She cried out, her eyes jittering about the scenery.
“Well, I don’t smell them.” I said, pointing to my nose. “You know I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you, right?”
Tesse’ sighed and shook her head. “Mama always protected me since I come here.”
I nodded. “That’s right.” I pointed to the riverbank. “Lets go over there- there are a whole bunch of winds there that will blow our feathers dry!” I cried out, giving my words a special emphasis.
So, you want us to cast wind magic? Why on Earth do you want to-
“And, guess what Tesse’ when the winds blow- it will feel like you’re flying even though you’re on the ground! I can only hope that the winds are KIND enough to blow for me!”
Okay! Okay! I get it! Sheesh!
.
I led Tesse’ to a spot that had exposed roots and had her use her talons to grab on, and right on cue, the winds picked up.
“EEEEEEE!” Tesse’ screamed and held on the the root, flapping her wings.
“Weeee!” I said with a large smile on my face and spread my wings, giving a few flaps as I too held onto the roots.
“MAMA! MAMA! HELP ME!” Tesse’ cried out, her eyes filled with panic.
“I’m right here, honey!” I said in a soothing voice and dusted her face with the tips of my feathers. “Just let your wings get dry!”
Uh, Karin? How strong do you want these winds?
“Don’t worry Tesse’ the winds will die down quite a bit….just a little...there! Right there! See?”
Tesse’s breathing slowed and she spread her wings, her eyes took on a predatory glean as she looked over the river and the opposite bank.
“This strange….” Tesse’ murmured. “Chest feels strange.” She said, placing her forelimb to her chest.
“Is it bad? Or good?” I said, flapping my wings and keeping my face bright and happy.
“It good.” She smiled. “Mama! I happy!” She cheered.
“Well good!” I said, and dusted her face again. “The winds should be dying down now….see? All better.”
.
I wrapped my wing around her and started to lead her back to my house. “Are you tired? Would you like some tea?”
Tesse’ nodded. “Uh huh! And naps!” She stopped and looked over my shoulder, her lip trembling. “Mama! Look!” She said, pointing.
I looked and noticed the afternoon hunting group arriving from the southern skies.
.
“Mmmm-hmmm!” I said and nodded. “They are the ones who bring us the meat you like so much. They fly to get to the hunting grounds.”
“Mama….I.....I want to fly too.” Tesse whimpered. “But….scared…..”
I held Tesse close to me. “My darling, it’ll be okay. You will know the skies someday. I promise. You have to be brave though. And I will be there every step of the way.”
Tesse sniffed and wiped her eyes. “Promise?”
I nodded. “Promise. Always.”
