“Happy Birthday, Darren, my darling!” Elena purred and hugged me from behind as I sat upon the chair and kissed my neck, nibbling a little.
“Thanks!” I said, looking at the sumptuous roasted Konna bird, and salivated a bit. The bird was a delicacy amongst the tribe, and having an entire bird was almost unheard of.
I stood and looked at my wife and cleared my throat. “Elena, please- let's grind and mash this into the traditional Hiaanta Dish and share it with the tribe!”
Elena gulped and her eyes widened. “But-But- My love, I caught this bird just for you!”
I nodded and kissed her forehead and held her. “Indeed, so I am going to save you a full bite of its flesh.” I cut a sliver of meat and put it away. “But I was thinking about an idea.,.,and I would like to come on the next hunting trip for the Konna bird migration.”
Elena glanced from the container that had the sliver of meat to the almost untouched bird and back to me. Her lips parted in a smile. “You really, really want to hunt, don’t you?”
I nodded, “At least just this once. I have an idea that may just get everyone a Konna bird to themselves!”
Elena tittered through her nose and nodded. “As your birthday present. I will certainly have you come along on my hunting party.”
I clasped my hands together and pulled another sliver of meat and deposited into Elena’s mouth as she came in for another kiss.
Her eyes widened in surprise and I surprised her again with a kiss over her lips.
”Thank you so much!”

I crouched with the other members from the hunting party and looked upon the special pool of water and its sandy beach where the Konna birds would gather and mate.
I looked around and saw two perfect palm trees and started to attach my ropes and netting.
“Elena, everyone….thank you for letting me come!” I whispered just as I finished putting the needed tension on the trees. “I am not going to interrupt what you are doing, but if they take flight after your start your volley, is when I am going to use this.”
Elena looked at the net positioned between the two trees. “We’ve tried nets before. They are too quick.”
"Will you really catch them?" Maria said, looking at me with a skeptical expression, "We never caught them in nets before, always too fast."
I nodded. “I think this might work if they are in the air, instead the ground.”
"Well, at least you are going to wait till they take to sky. We can never get more than one volley of arrow."
I nodded, "Yep, I don't want to interfere too much with your style. I just want to see how this will work."
Maria and Elena shrugged, and we waited.
.
Soon, the sounds of Konna birds filled the air and they warbled and settled on the sandbar and scratched and dug for the beetles that made their home by the water.
The hunting party slowly rose, nocked their arrows and loosed them on a specific command.
I’ve always heard the tales the hunters spoke of for the Konna birds, that they were easily frightened and fast to fly away, but I now understood why everyone shot an arrow at the same time. Maria was right, there would have been no time to get more than one volley off.
As they took flight and started to turn into the current I cut the retaining rope and watched my net chase after them….going….going….
“YES!” I cried out, seeing about a third of the flock wrapped up in the net as it plummeted to the ground, and got snagged on a low branch.
With loud whooping and cheering the Amazon Tribe quickly descended upon the captured flock, and pinned the net down to ensure the birds any chance to escape.
Elena and I rushed forward with the medium sized cage I brought and made sure to grab five females and two males, keeping them alive and apart.
The entire tribe squealed with happiness as they tied up the bird’s feet to poles and we all sang happily as we carried the bounty into the village.
"Elena!" Maria cried happily with her stick of four birds attached to it. "This is the best hunt ever! You have a great husband! He is the best hunter!"
Elena smiled and kissed my cheek as we carried the cage. "Thank you! I am lucky husband is so smart!"
.
Once we arrived, the news spread immediately; everyone, even the children was going to have a full roasted Konna bird to themselves.
The roasting pit was fired up and everyone joined in on plucking the feathers to be made into garments later, and took turns turning the spit. All the while, casting happy glances at me and Elena for the sudden good fortune!
Even my cage with the two males and five females got plenty of attention with people peeking everyso often under the blankets over the cage to keep the birds calm.
Life was going to change for the better as we were now going to have a source of domesticated Konna birds for eggs, meat, and even pets!
Later after a wonderful feast I held my darling Elena in my arms as she snuggled up to my chest. The soft crackle of the fire lulling us to sleep along with the quiet chirps of the newest addition to the tribe.
