The orphanage was full of glee as parents came to take some of them away from this hellish life of poverty. Everyone wanted to leave this decrepit place; they wanted a family, who would cuddle them on the long cold nights. A family that ate together and played games like the ones depicted in the story books.  Every child wanted to have that fairy tale life none more than Alec, the boy had been living at the orphanage since he was four now thirteen. He was among the oldest kids never to have been adopted in the orphanage’s history.

Alec walked into the headmaster’s office, his eyes casted downward. He never like to make eye to eye contact with anyone. Every time he would look at one of the adults, they would look at him see his mismatch blue and hazel eyes and his odd looking left leg and become suddenly discouraged from adopting him.

“Mr. Hudson” the boy said quietly. The man sitting at the desk looked up smiled sitting the adoption papers aside.

“Yes, Alec what is the matter?”

“Nothing is wrong I just came to ask if I could go check the drop off box, for a book”

“Oh, well I haven’t had time to check this week due to the adoptions but, sure go ahead” Mr. Hudson gave Alec a heartwarming smile as he returned to the adoption forms. Alec hobbled down the hallway into the main room, where the children and adults interacted. Alec couldn’t help but fill a sad, he loved making friends the other orphans but every time he crafted a new bond it was quickly severed by adoption. Eventually Alec gave up on making friends and kept to himself reading books and overhearing the other children talk.

Crossing over the room ignoring the attention the adults and other children gave his odd waddle. He made it to the drop off box. Inside where a sundry category of books and some balled up pieces of paper; digging though the discarded pile. Alec had found a few big tomes, one that caught his attention was a black leather book with yellow color pages; it had a title that was illegible. But Alec felt an odd feeling in his stomach it was excitement one he only felt on fast-food day.

He took the old books and rushed to the bedroom anxious to read its cryptic pages. Once he was inside the room he closed the door so the noises of the other children wouldn’t distract him. Sitting in on his bed, Alec opened the book and was greeted by a putrid smell of mold from years of neglect.

Recovering from the books smell, Alec saw pictures of magical runes beside them where pictures of girls with odd features. One had a serpent body for a lower torso he saw another serpent that unlike the previous one had odd marking on her body. Next to each picture was a long paragraph of symbols that he couldn’t decipher. Closing the black book Alec opened the green book and saw some of the symbols from the black book translated into the English alphabet. An urge told the boy to study the text he felt that this book could help him get what he wanted, so Alec began studying.

Over the winter season Alec translated chapters one though five into English, eventually stopped translating as the language became becoming easier and easier to understand. The young scholar while succeeding in the literary parts didn’t know how to speak it. He didn’t have a language teacher and stuck to using word for word translation.

The first week of spring was celebrated with a fundraiser where people from all over the community get together and help raise money to fix up the old building. Alec and a few other orphans help bake goods with the local bakery. When Alec made a muffin with peanut butter instead of peanuts because someone had took the nutcracker. Tossing in the artificial muffins the boy hoped no one world notice. When a mother came with her child moments after purchasing her muffin; Alec wanted to hide in his room fearing that the mother was going to speak with the bakery owner and complain, resulting in Alec being scolded by Mr. Hudson. To the boy’s surprise the mother wanted another batch, praising how good the muffin was.

Miss Clover wished to know who made that recipe she asked the children but none step forward except for Joe. Alec remembers hearing Joe’s voice when he was washing his hands near his station. “I did” Joe proclaimed boldly with a cheeky smile. Alec breathed a sigh of relief hearing that lie, he didn’t want to draw attention to himself.

“My Joe I never knew you had such a skill for cooking, how about you show me how you made the batter” Miss Clover took out a bowl and mixer. She watched as Joe made the muffin batter adding peanut butter into the mix. Alec joined the group of spectators he saw Joe was on the right path until he added the sweet peanut butter and sugar. Joe wasn’t among those that tasted Alec’s creation. So he was assuming that was used. Alec wanted to jump in and stop him but the peer pressure silenced him.

When the muffins were served to the customers’ people who weren’t allergic to peanuts or had diabetes flocked to the peanut muffin line. The lady from earlier was first in line to receive the muffin bit into and flinched. “This is good but it’s a bit too sweet for my liking” She told Miss Clover. Despite not being as good as the mistake batch. Joe’s muffins still soled well.

Joe was adopted by Miss Clover later that day, Alec felt terrible after seeing Joe, a kid who bullies him called him hurtful things like broken and cripple was given a loving parent like Miss Clover. Alec decided against tell Miss Clover the truth and instead wrote down the peanut butter muffin recipe slipped into Joe’s bag while he was in the bathroom.

Alec returned to his room when he was allowed to do so by Mr. Hudson. Pulling out his book Alec submerges himself in the ancient text. He wished he had a mother like Miss Clover even when Joe failed at making the ideal muffin, she still adopted him.

The book felt warm to the touch but the warmth was from sitting in the sunlight all day it was pulsing heat like the beating of the heart. Alec felt an overwhelming sense of comfort from its pages. He heard the voice that sounded like a gentle breeze blowing through the night. “What is it that you desire the voice” asked softly what he wanted most in the world. Alec casted aside the fear of the ominous voice and replied softy “A mother that’s all I want” After stating his wish the voice went silent for a moment then asked once more. “Gaze upon the pages and seek who speaks loudest to you”

Alec flicked though the pages reading each description carefully. He wanted a mother who loved him, protected him and provided for him. Since he never knew his mother he wasn’t really sure on personality as long as they did those three motherly virtues he didn’t care how they looked or what their disposition was, as long as he had a mother that was all that mattered. But it was hard to choose some frightened him while others made him question what a mother was. So he closed his eyes and let his heart decide.

End of Prequel
