On the Order of Angels

Angels are a grand race. In the current age they are considered Mamano due to the corruption of the Succubi, they are nevertheless on the side of Humanity and the Church, only the wicked need fear them.

However due to working on the orders of the Chief God, and being hostile to the Demon Lord and all her forces, less is known about them than many of the more common monsters, save what is taught from Church Doctrine.

Angels belong to different orders, casts, and sects, divided by rank and occupation. Any who aid an Angel on their quest will be blessed. They are rarely enocuntered in groups, known as a Choir, any such sighting would signal an immenent disaster, as they would only appear in such numbers if one were to happen soon. Instead, if they are encountered at all, it is often solitary. Only the most blessed will ever see more than one angel in his entire life.

An Angel is only sent to the Mortal realm as part of a Divine Quest. This can vary, from sending a message to a Human, protecting an important individual or Holy Relic, to lead Crusades into the Demon Realm, or aid a Hero on their journey. It is expected to aid these Angels if one ever encounters them, and they will be blessed with good fortune and good tidings if they do so, however it is extremely presumptious to ever command an Angel even for the most powerful of Humans.

While still rare, sightings of Angels has gone on the rise in the current age. Both due to the turning tide of the war agains the Demon Realm, and due to the subconscious desires implanted within them by the Succubi. However these urges are often controlled by the Angels due to their belief in Church Doctrine, and by their own natural grace.

Rank: Cherub

Habitat: Heaven

Disposition: Devoted, Naiive, Clumsy

Diet: Prayer, Good Deeds, Spirit Energy of Human Men

The lowest rank of Angel, they are young, appearing to be the age of a child, or just prior to pubescence, with a golden Halo, a glowing complexion, wearing a simple white cloth. These are some of the most commonly seen and depicted angels. Essentially Apprentice Angelings, they are expected to do the busy work of the Divine World, and often act as messengers to more important Angels. While born with natural Grace and Divinity, they lack wings, which they must first earn by doing a suitably good deed. They are not considered full angels until they do, and this is paramount to the existence of a Cherub, who will often spend all their spare time fantasizing about one day earning their wings.

Brought up to believe God's Word, they inherently believe in good, and having been raised in heaven, are ignorant of evil. They are pure, and fail to see any flaws in their beliefs, but they are more naiive than anything else, and are quick to forgive, and quick to love.

Eager to become true angels, they are hard-workers, single-mindedly devoting themselves in devotion to their Chief-God and whatever task is assigned to them. Unfortunately such devotion and eagerness has a tendency to cause as many problems as they solve, which they are quick to rectify, causing more problems in the process.

Despite their purity and clumsiness, they are some of the most frequently spotted Angels in this currupt world. This is because that while they must wait many years and work hard to earn their wings in Heaven, any succusful mission in the Mortal World is guaranteed to grant them their wings, and as such, there is never a shortage of volunteers for such missions, and with the rise of the current Demon Lord, the Angels are short-handed.

In order to avoid their corruption, Cherubs are only sent for the lowest of tasks in the Mortal Realm, to guide a lost boy from the woods, bring fortune to an ailing traveler, bless a friendly tavern and all who come, and the like, far from the reach from any monster who would be willing to corrupt them. Despite this, Cherubs are still frequently currupted, either due to circumstance, or their own ineptness. Ironically, in losing their grace, they gain their wings, and all that entails. Whether or not they are still Cherubs or Cherubiim depends on whether they decide to keep their child-like figure, or adopt a more voluptious form, even then, with their wings, they would still be techinically considered Cherubiim.

Though the lowest order of Angel, they still have the most fundamental powers Angels have, save for flight. They can control light, which they can make inherently holy, burning away Demonic Energy, and warming any in it's light. They can naturally sense Holy Places and Relics, and places of worship, but they can only find them so long as their sense of direction is good. Using their grace they can heal the sick and wounded. They can bring Blessings to other, essentially increasing their luck, and steering them away from Monsters and places with Demonic Energy. They can also do the opposite, cursing, which will lower someons luck, brining misfortune to them. And to better complete their Divine Quests, they can shed their divine appearance, appearing as a completely ordinary young human girl, passing through areas virtually unnoticed, provided they don't trip over anything. However all these powers can only be used at their bear minumum. Anything more, and they risk exhausting themselves.

They are fundamentally curious about human nature, and are attracted to new things like the child they appear to be, this is especially true of sweets, as they are drawn to them like flies to honey, using sweets to extort favors from them is very easy.

If you should ever encounter a Cherub, which you will almost certainly do by accident, if you offer to help her, she will offer you one wish. Note however, that it is only a personal code that compels her to do this, and she will only grant your request on her own time, and it may take years to get back to you. However, she will never forget about you should you aid her in getting her wings. You cannot ask her to do anything against her moral code, and you should only expect something from her that is within her power to do. Make sure you ask her what she can and can't do, as she will likely be so eager for help to get her wings, whe may try to grant a wish that will be near impossible. At the worst you will have wasted a wish. At best, it will take several years to be granted. Be careful if you wish to marry her. She might grant your wish, ask you to be more specific, or flee on the spot. Make sure you gage what type of personality she has beforehand, she may be so naiive that she doesn't grasp the conflict between marriage and her heavenly duties, she might and not care, or she may be too concerned with her duties to consider anything

Rank: Cherubiim

Habitat: Heaven

Disposition: Determined, Devoted, Flustered

Diet: Good Deeds, Prayer, Spirit Energy of Human Men

A Cherub who has succusfully gained her wings, and become a full angel. They continue their apprenticeship for some time before they ever return to the Mortal Realm, where they appear as young women. They are often seen in light white gowns with various braids decorating their limbs, with some sparse armor, and a single weapon. The wings of an Angel were once located between the shoulder blades, but since their corruption by the Succubi, they have moved to their hips like the demons themselves. Their wings are always pure white in a way that seems impossible.

Cherubiim are the rank-and-file of heaven, and are sent on the missions too important for Cherubs, but not important enough for Seraphiim. These missions are often to help aspiring Hero's, deliver messages to churchs, and protect humans too important to trust in the care of Cherubs.

It is unknown how Angels age. Some say they age half as long as Humans, other say half-again as long, or twice as long, or that they can live centuries. However it is known that few have ever claimed to see an Angel that looked old, and even then, they may have just been disguising themselves.

Their powers have grown since their time as Cherubs, and can skillfully manipulate Holy Light, use Holy Relics as a compass, heal the wounded from their sick beds, and with blessings bring fortune to small villages, and bring ruin to the house of an evil man. They have also since taken up a weapon of choice, often a soldiers weapon, like a sword, or spear, or bow, that they have learned to skillfully handle in order to defend themselves. They can hide themselves well enough, that you will likely only see them if they purposefully reveal themselves to you, either to provide a wish they promised you as Cherub, or as part of their Divine Quest.

Despite how competent they sound, they are actually little better than in their Cherub days. The added burdens given to them with the granting of their wings has forced them to become more competent, but at the same time often frays at their nerves. In addition, as they start to handle some of the more complex affairs of Heaven, some begin to lose their blind faith, as many of their new duties can threaten to overwhelm them. For this reason, their corrupted counterparts are much more dangerous and competent than their pure flustered and bumbling personalities may have you believe, especially against any former friends they may encounter, as a Cherubiim could easily have her faith subverted by doubts and be corrupted, freeing her of her doubts, leaving a much more calm and capable Dark Cherubiim, who would know just which buttons to push should one of her former friends find her.

They are still as curious about human nature as before, but this at least more tempered. They still have a fondness for sweets, but more as a snack, and they have enough common sense to get there own than to have favors extorted from them by whoever lords it over them.

Also, since their duties have increased, they tend to take a harsher view of the world than in their Cherub days. They will be much more willing to punish and curse those who break laws and church doctrine. However, they are willing to make exceptions, for instance, if they encounter a man who steals to feed his family, she may bless him so he will no longer need to steal, though perhaps not until he returns the goods to their rightful owner, and apologizes. Unfortunately not every Cherubiim will fully think through the consequence of her punishment, though many more will tend to overthink it. They will also attempt to rescue those entrapped by monsters, however from their naiive viewpoint, this will include anyone who is in a couple with a Mamano, regardless of whether the man is consenting or not. Attempting to explain they are in a loving relationship will result in a reading of official Church Doctrine, regardless of the local practice. If the Angel is conviced that they are in a loving devoted relationship that is otherwise within Church Doctrine, she may let them pass. Conversely, she may get sidetracked trying to split up the couple if she deems them too obscene or lewd. According to some travelling companions of Cherubiim though, there is a cutoff point, at which if a Monster Couple (or Couples) go on length on how monstrously obscene and lewd their partnership is, she may leave them alone just to be away from the conversation.

Angels as a rule are generally naiive about sex, as they only ever learn from Church Doctrine, and believe it most strictly themselves. They are not appossed to love, but they believe relationships to be wholly chaste and romantic, and sex to be only a gruelling act, meant to show how much the other wants to have children with their chosen partner. Thusly, many Cherubiim who travel to todays world often suffer a form of culture shock whenever they venture outside anywhere but the most Church Dominated Human Kingdoms.

Rank: Cupid

Habitat: Heaven, Human Kingdoms

Disposition: Romantic, Idealistic

Diet: Good Deeds, Prayer, Romantic Love, Spirit Energy of Human Men

Ostensibly the same as Cherubiim, Cupids are much more specialised, they spend more time in the Mortal Realm than most of their counterparts. Their jobs are to spread love between Human men and women. This occupation predates the current era, but it has since seen a dramatic increase. Previously Cupids held honored positions, meant to ensure the love of Hero's and Princes and Princesses. Now their domain is in the common thoroughfare.

It boils down to simple math. In the previous era, monsters would prey on both men and women equally, diminishing the numbers of the entire population. In the current era, monsters pray near exclusively on men, what women they prey on get converted into monster who in turn prey upon more men, who will then father more monsters.

Since the Church still preaches monogomy, and Monster women tend to be severely less picky in their men than Human women, Cupids are sent to rectify that. They tend to pull double-duty on holidays

Cupids are mostly volunteers, those Cherubs and Cherubiim who are enamored with the Human world, and more enamored with romance than the most love-stricken Mermaid. Armed with enchanted bows and arrows with the most powerful Charms that can foster love between any two compatible people. Though famed, as there is no defense agains these arrows, they are not the most powerful, as they will not affect a man or woman who is already in love with another, and it will not make someone fall for someone they truly abhor, and the effects do wear off, but usually not until everything important has happened. Cupids are also equipped with arrows that can cancel the Charm arrows effects in cases of emergencies. If by chance, an arrow causes someone to fall for someone they already love, whether it is someone who is hiding their feelings, or the Cupid accidently strikes someone already in a relationship, the victim will lose all rationality, becoming hopelessly in love with their partner, essentially worshipping them until the effect wear off. Angels themselves are immune to these effects.

Cupids use their ability to cloak to watch out for prospective couples, and can easly remain hidden while they find the perfect vantage point for their shot. However aside from their tools for the job, they have no special qualties to them.

Attitudes towards their duties vary. Some Cupids prefer only to use their powers for struggling couples, who need just the right push. Others play matchmaker with near every Human they see. Too many tend to shoot first and ask questions later. Mistakes have been known to happen, with interesting results, that will usually take a long time to rectify, should the Cupid in question see fit to do so. As a result of the unfortunate need to boost the power of their arrows, and the result there-after, Cupids are markably more knowledgable about sex, as a part of their job, and are thusly quite proud of it. While any Mamano would likely laugh at the proud way they would brag about their knowledge, their Angel friends, much to their disgust and fascination, will look to them were the topic ever come up, seeing them as experts. They see sex as less a grueling act, or an act of passion, and mostly as a proclaiment of love, like the signing of a document, of the wearing of a wedding band. Herein is an inherent danger of awakening their Succubus instincts, however their love of love itself usually saves them from the depths of depravity, even if they were ever to fall for a Human.

However, a corrupted Cupid is a most dangerous thing, armed with their bow and arrow, if they were to become a dreaded Eros, they manage to creat their own arrows, powered by their own Demonic Energy and Lust. Results have been bad enough to create village wide orgies, turning the entire populations into Monsters. For this reason, Eros are at the top of Heavens wanted list to be hunted down by Seraphiim.

If ever seen, they are distinguished from Cherubiim by their distinctive bow and arrow, which is much more dainty and ornate than a true weapon, and the red, pink, and heart motifs of their tunic which is usually worn in a more risque fashion, and their fluffier than normal wings, this is thought to mostly come from primping and preening.

Rank: Seraphiim

Habitat: Heaven

Disposition: Haughty, Strong, Devoted

Diet: Good Deeds, Prayer, Spirit Energy of Human Men

Seraphiim are the elite soldiers of heaven. They have mastered the use of their weapons and divine gifts. They appear as adult women, and have been granted an additional two pairs of wings, totalling in six, which allows them tremondous speed and flight. They are clad in some of the strongest lightest armor ever made. They are resolute in their vows, and unflinching in their devotion. They watch over the Cherubs and Cherubiim, and assign them their duties.

They are called down to the Human Realm only for the most important reasons, to retrieve lost relics, aid hero's braving the Demon Realm, and defend entire nations.

Dealing with them can be troublesome. They expect everyone to listen to them, and rarely listen to anyone else. They are harsh and unforgiving, though not completely without compassion and understanding, to tread for more than they are willing to give is foolish. Fortunately few but the greatest of Hero's needs to deal with them for long, save for ongoing invasions.

They are poweful, skilled, fast, and dangerous. Any who come under the wrath of a Seraphiim is not expected to last long. Those who fight well may be given a small mercy, a chance to repent and surrender. It would be wise to take her up on this offer, as it is not given often.

Unlike their Cherubiim Sisters, Seraphiim will rarely have any understanding for a Mamano couple, and will not only seperate thim, but often see to end or at least drive off the wife. Thankfully however, she will often be too focused in her divine quest to do this actively, and will only divert her attention in case of especially egregious examples.

For anyone who must be in the company of a Seraphiim long, know that behind their harsh zealousness lies a compassionate heart from their early days as Cherubs, even retaining an embarrassing (to them) fondness of sweets. They still believe in good and all things, and seek to do good at the end of the day, but refuse to doubt their strict code. They are vary wary of letting their guard down either, as it may interfere with her Holy Duties, or worse yet, open her heart for way of corruption.

However, some cases have been reported of Seraphiim falling in love with their charges, vowing to protect them, regardless of their chosen ones martial prowess. They may arrange for more Holy Quests with them, to keep the tryst going. Those who are unable to reconcile their love with their duties either way however are destined to become Dark Seraphiim. These Fallen Angels however are thankfully reclusive once they have turned. They know all too well what happens should they overstep their bounds, and they will either run off with their new-found husbands, or live a quiet debaucherous life far into the Demon Realm.

Rank: Valkyrie

Habitat: Heaven

Disposition: Fierce, Compassionate

Diet: Good Deeds, Prayer, Spirit Energy of Human Men

Valkyries are a kind of Seraphiim, those who particularly love combat, and tend not to care for the more orderly aspects of Heaven. They tend to be clad in thicker armor than their sisters, and likewise carry larger weapons, with the built physique to accomadate her arms and armor. They are always the first into the fight, and as such serve as the shock troops for Angels when need be. A Valkyrie is never sent unless there is a fight to be had, and as such, they are a much more frightening sight than a Seraphiim is.

While they have a love of combat, and will not hesitate to join a fight, they have a strict code of honor, as they will not fight for a cause they feel is unjust. If you ever face against a Valkyrie, aside from surrender, your best choice is to convince her that there is no need to fight you.

Valkyries are much more frequently spotted in the northern frozen territories, where there lie entrenched many Demon and Undead Kingdoms. Coincidentally, they are renkowned for their warmth, as they wield their holy light like spears, and the concentrated energy gives them a high body temperature. They are most commonly sighted by injured warriers, whom they are known to stop to help any they may come across, many are even assigned to heal injured Hero's as part of their quest, sheltering them, and healing them with her prayer and blessings, even bringing them back from the brink of death, though not without a few scars. Adventurers claim they find them attractive, and indeed, they sport many battle scars that do nothing to bar their heavenly beauty. As a result, they are both seen as a blessing, and as an omen of death, and few go out of their way to meet such creatures. They sometimes accompany warriors they have met or helped for a time during their Quests if she thinks they might be of some use, or the warrior volunteers to help, and she may even stay longer if they enjoy their company.

Unfortunately, though rare, a Dark Valkyrie can be one of the most dangerous monsters to face. Unless in an extremely loving relationship with a Husband, she will have an almost fetishistic approach to combat, essentially becoming a combat sadist constantly seraching for battle. Their armor becomes noticeably less practical, as it will cover hardly enough skin to cover a blow, but due to her skill at combat, and love of bloodshed, it matters very little. At that point, your best bet would be to find yourself in a large group of warriors, and hide yourself while she beats them all to a pupl, and hide, hoping she forgets about you.

Flame Swordswoman

Habitat: Holy Sites

Disposition: Calm, Devoted

Diet: Prayer, Spirit Energy of Human Men

Another kind of Seraphiim, these Angels are reathed in Holy Elfire, and can control it at will, in addition to there other heavenly gifts, which they sadly don't see as much use with.

These Swordswoman, rather than live in heaven, with the rest of their Angel sisters, instead live permenantly in the Mortal Realm, guarding Holy Sights, Relics, and rarely Destined Heros. from any who might do them harm. To that end, they are clad, head to toe in thick armor, with each carrying a sword, reathed in Elfire, with a burning Halo above their heads. Their six wings are noticably smaller than other Seraphiims, which they fold along their waist, almost looking like a part of their armor. What they lack in speed, the more than make up in power. Curiously, the Flame Swordswomen are the only Angels to wear shoes, as they spend all their time standing, guarding their charge. They will stand, guarding their charge, for as long as they draw breath, and they are believed to be in fact the greatest warriors in all of Heaven.

If you were to approach them, they would warn you off. If you were to tell them you mean no harm, they will tolerate you, so long as you move no further. They do this even to Mamano, and will tolerate their prescence so long as they do not threaten what they guard. Should someone threaten them or their precious ward, they will not hesistate for a full on attack, obliterating whatever stands in their way. They will use their heavenly light as great throwing spears, and using the Elfire wrapped around their sword to burn away what's left.

Elfire works rather curiously, much like the fire of a Salamander, or Ignis, it won't burn any the Angel does not want it to. However, should she so wish it, were she to attack someone, it would still burn only the wicked, and leave the pure of heart. If it were to attack a Monster, it would burn away all the demonic energy until none is left. If the Monster was previously Human, it would burn away the demonic energy until she would be returned to her previous form. If a human male is caught having absorbed demonic energy, it will burn that away, but provided he is still pure of heart, it will stop there. Because of this ability, some Monsters, wanting to integrate better into Human Society, will make pilgrimages to these Angels, often with their Husbands, to ask to turn into Humans. So long as their charge is not threatened, they will grant these requests. This is especially popular amongst Lamia's and Mermaids. Keep in mind however that while reathed in Elfire, while leaving no physical damage, is still extremely and excruciatingly painful.

The only way to get past her, is by express permission of the Chief God, usually granting an adventuring hero the use of a relic of holy site that the Angel is guarding. While many Angels are prone to falling in love, a Flaming Swordswoman will refuse to leave her post no matter what. Some Hero's however fall for her, and  return, to help her guard her charge, or otherwie move so that he can live close to her. In this way, she may fall for her Hero.

With almost no means outside of an army, which even then the Seraphiim is likely to defeat, the only way any wayward Monster were to get whatever she is guarding is through trickery. Little escapes her eyes, but she can still be corrupted by her Succubus desires. If one were to notice a blossoming romance, they might try to fan it, corrupt it, so that the Angel may fall.

However, were this to actually happen, the Angel in question would see a rather drastic shift in priorities. Having been trained for their entire lives to fight, defend and guard, they know little else. Their sole purpose in life is to follow the Chief Gods Will, and guard their charge. With the inclusion of a Husband, they can enjoy their time with him while they do so. But if they were to become corrupted, they would change their lifes purpose from 'guarding this because God says so' to 'guarding my Husband because he is God'. Since guarding is so in built to their lives, they can't think of anything else to do to their husbands, even while gripped by their depraved Succubus instincts. To that end however, they'll often take whatever they were guarding, and offer it to their Husband as a sign of their devotion, before clearing off before anyone can seperate them. While marginally less worrisome than other Dark Angels by far, they still take whatever they please to please their Husbands, as they think they deserve the very best, and they have the power to take anything that catches their eyes.

Rank: Archangel

Habitat: Heaven

Disposition: Varies

Diet: Good Deeds, Prayer, Spirit Energy of Human Men

At the very top of the echelons of Heaven, they outrank all others. Though few in number, they're power is immense, rivalling that of the infamous Lilim themselves. They wear light armor with a great billowing cape, and each carry a different weapon.

Their power is so great they can cast great miracles, feats capable of defying logic.

They have only appeared a few times as far as anyone has recorded, but each appearance is shrouded in myth, the tellings are so grand.

Thankfully, none have ever fallen. One shudders to think what may happen to the world, were that ever to happen.
