I awoke to find both my jiangshi and the jinko cuddled up to me underneath my cloak. Both were still sleeping, but they were both lying against me in such a way that if I tried to leave, they’d surely wake up. I sighed as I tried to make myself more comfortable, and I looked over at the smoldering remains of the fire. Everything had been turned to ash by now, leaving a scorch marks and still some smoke floating gently into the sky.

A stiff breeze picked up, nearly pulling my cloak off of us. Luckily I was between two warm bodies, so I wasn’t cold, but I knew I needed my cloak if I wanted to stay warm. I adjusted my right arm to keep the cloak on us, and looked to my right to see what I was doing. My eyes were instead met with the wide-open eyes of my jiangshi.

“Good morning, Master,” she said cheerfully.

“Did I wake you?” I asked.

She chuckled. “No. Jiangshi and undead don’t sleep. I’ve been lying here all night waiting for you to wake up.”

I looked away, unable to think of something to say. Luckily, she spoke before me.

“If we’re going to make this work, you’re going to have less sleeping hours.”

“No, no,” I pressed my forehead against hers for emphasis, “I’m not losing sleep.” Just then the jinko stirred. I managed to get her name was Yin.

She groaned and I turned to face her just as her eyes were opening. “Good morning,” she said. She nonchalantly got out from underneath the cloak and put her armor on. “What was this about needing to tell everyone in the village? Is bedding a jinko that big of a deal?”

“No, I was going to tell them that your saliva helped cure the disease.”

She closed her eyes and looked away like it was no big deal. “Every jinko’s saliva can cure it. It’s nothing special, really.”

I didn’t respond for a good amount of time. Every jinko can cure the plague, but the people of Xao are dying slowly while they hate jinkos for whatever reason. “Do you know why the people of Xao won’t let jinkos in?”

She looked back at me. “No, I have no idea and neither do the other jinkos. Everyone in my village wishes we could open relations with the human town, but we can’t.”

I grinned. “I think I know how to smooth relations between your village and Xao.” I looked down the mountain at the village. A lot of the mist had dissipated thanks to the warm sun in the early fall. “We just need to get down there.”

My jiangshi got out from underneath the cloak, and pulled it off of me. “We shouldn’t waste time, Master. You came here to cure these people.”

“I know. I did,” I said as I stood up and grabbed my clothes. Now that I had the cure to the disease, touching my infected clothes didn’t seem like an issue. I got dressed with my jiangshi as Yin had already finished dressing herself, and she waited for us to finish as well.

"Are you ready?" I asked them both as I finished putting on my hat. I decided to carry my mask and hood because it’d be easier on the citizens when we arrived.

Yin took a nervous breath. "Yeah," she said. I wasn’t sure if telling her what I planned would make her any less nervous since she’d be meeting with Xao’s leader directly.

"Yes," my jiangshi said. She had a little extra enthusiasm, probably because the last time she met Xuan, she got to have sex with me.

“Let’s go,” I said as I turned down the mountain and began walking. The two women followed me closely all the way to the village. When we arrived, we first received a few strange looks from the nervous citizens who dared to be outside their homes anymore in these troubling times, and Yin tried to hide her face.

I placed one hand on her shoulder. "Trust me, they'll love you. If not for what your village offers, then at least for your medical offers.” She nodded and smiled slightly, and I knew she was feeling a little bit better.

I led them through the town trying to keep as low profile as I could muster despite the fact that jinkos and jiangshis weren't exactly commonplace. We walked to the government building, and I opened the door leading my jiangshi and Yin inside. They both decided to stay by the door as I approached Xuan’s desk, and based on Xuan’s lack of response to them, I assumed they were hidden behind me.

"Hroo-er-hin! Surprise to see you here, you haven’t made any cures," Xuan greeted me.

"That's right, sir," I said. "But as you may know, I can only cure one victim a day. At that rate, half the town could die before I get to them." I needed to give them no other option for the jinkos' sake.

He looked me up and down with confusion at what I just said and he noticed I wasn't wearing my doctoring clothes. "Are you...saying we have no chance?"

"Xuan," I began, "I found a more effective cure. We could cure everyone, probably within a few days." I looked at the clear skin on my arm.

His eyes widened in near disbelief and he leaned forward with anticipation, and I admired how much he cares for his village. "Wait, I go get Gungtu. He may want to hear."

When he returned with Gungtu, who I could tell had heard the news by his expression. "Doctor, what you say?" he asked.

"I know how to cure your village, but it will take some getting used to." I moved to the side, exposing the jinko behind me.

Both Gungtu and Xuan went into defensive stances. "Why you bring jinko?" Gungtu asked me.

"She is the cure," I said. Both men remained silent and looked at each other. "I was infected, but it seems saliva of a jinko will cure the plague faster than I can. Sir, your town needs them just as much as they need your town."

"Can you prove?" Gungtu asked me. I looked at Yin and nodded.

"If you bring me to a sick person, I can repeat what I did for Llewellyn," Yin replied. It was refreshing to hear my name pronounced correctly for the first time since I arrived in Siaina.

“Even better,” I rolled up my sleeve, revealing the healing boils and scars they left over. “She licked my arm last night, and now the plague is almost gone.” I looked up from my arm at the two men, “You need to fix the relations with the jinko village. They will come in and will cure the plague faster than I ever could.”

Gungtu and Xuan both raised an eyebrow. "What make you think jinko want to be friends?" Xuan said.

“Jinko stole our people before, they do it again if they come in our town,” Gungtu reaffirmed Xuan’s argument.

“We want to open trade with you,” Yin spoke out, “Mei, our next leader, wants nothing more than to open trade with your village. She knows it will help jinkos flourish as well as humans. Please, you have to let us in to cure your people, and then think of the opportunities with two unified tribes.”

"Doctor," Gungtu called my attention, "Make jinkos know they can come. We can make peace."
